Charitable Gift Annuity
The name “charitable gift annuity” may sound complex, but it is simply a contract between a donor and a charitable organization, such as the Schneider Museum of Art. In exchange for the transfer of money or other assets to the organization, a fixed annual income is paid to the donor. The amount of annual income (annuity) is determined by the value of the gift and the life expectancy of the person(s) receiving the annuity.
The charitable organization receives an advantage in the form of a gift and the donor also reaps extensive benefits. As is the case with most charitable donations, there are tax deduction benefits in establishing a charitable gift annuity. For instance, a charitable gift annuity removes assets from the estate for probate and tax purposes, relieves the donor from asset management and may bypass capital gains. Additionally, the donor retains income for life, often at a higher rate of return than they otherwise would. Best of all, it provides the donor with the satisfaction of supporting their charity of choice in a significant manner.
