Two New Exhibitions Open at the Schneider Museum of Art
Ashland, Oregon Two new photojournalism exhibitions open at the Schneider Museum of Art, Southern Oregon University, on January 9, 2007. Measures of Time features work by David Burnett, a photojournalist who has traveled the world recording some of the more salient and emblematic moments of the latter-half of the twentieth century. In The Light Becomes Us, documentary photographer and SOU educator Dennis Dunleavy explores another facet of photojournalism – the long form, visual narrative tradition. His work documents displaced and repatriated Central American refugee families from 1987 to 1996.
Photojournalism is a complex, human way of capturing, describing, and explaining to others what words often fail to do. The photographer’s eye informs, constructs, and shapes our social reality. Through the photograph the viewer is allowed to see beyond the picture-making process, to enter and connect with humanity and the world, each photo constructed to capture a decisive moment in time.
David Burnett is a photojournalist with more than 40 years of experience covering the news and tempo of our age. In 1976 he co-founded Contact Press Images in New York, and for the last three decades, he has traveled extensively, working for most of the major photographic and general interest magazines in the U.S. and Europe. His work encompasses news, feature, and people pictures, as well as landscapes.
Amongst his many awards Burnett is a recipient of the Magazine Photographer of the Year award; a World Press Photo of the Year winner, and a Robert Capa Award winner from the Overseas Press Club. In 2006, he also won a First Place in the Presidential category in the White House News Photographers' Association.
Dennis Dunleavy is an Assistant Professor in the Communications Department at Southern Oregon University. Prior to his educational career, he spent more than 20 years as a photojournalist and correspondent in the U.S., Mexico, and Central America.
Dunleavy has been recognized in the January/February 2007 edition of American Photo magazine, as one of photography’s most influential bloggers. Dunleavy’s blog was chosen for having significantly impacted photography in our society. According to the magazine, Dunleavy has emerged as a recognized authority on everything from the use of cell phone cameras in the London subway bombings to the ethics of photo manipulation.
Measures in Time and The Light Becomes Us will continue through February 24, 2007. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, January 11, from 5-8 pm. The event is free and open to the public.
The Schneider Museum of Art is located on the campus of Southern Oregon University on the corner of Siskiyou Boulevard and Indiana Street, in Ashland, Oregon. Museum Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 am-4 pm, and First Fridays from 10 am-7 pm. There is a $3 suggested donation. For more information call 541-552-6245 or visit www.sou.edu/sma.
