Emblems, Effigies, and Enigmas: The Art of John Buck
Ashland, Oregon The Schneider Museum of Art at Southern Oregon University presents Emblems, Effigies, and Enigmas: The Art of John Buck, September 29-December 9, 2006. This exhibition marks the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Schneider Museum of Art. A special ceremony will be held on Thursday, September 28, from 5-6 pm, in the plaza area in front of the museum followed by an opening reception for John Buck from 6-8 p.m. The events are free and open to the public.
The construction of the Schneider Museum of Art was a collaborative project between then Southern Oregon State College and the southern Oregon community. In 1983 the state designated the college as the state institution for the fine and performing arts. A major donation by Bill and Florence Schneider sealed the deal to build a fine arts museum on the campus. In the fall of 1986 the doors of the museum opened to the public.
To celebrate this landmark occasion the Schneider Museum staff has chosen to present an exhibition of works by John Buck. A Montana resident, Buck was singled out because of his unique accomplishments as a sculptor, painter, and printmaker, which have brought him to the forefront of contemporary Northwest art. The maturity, originality, and unwavering focus of his work have made him part of a generation that has attracted the attention of art lovers all over the country, and caused the Northwest to be considered a significant region for the growth and development of contemporary art. The exhibition includes prints and print blocks, wooden and bronze sculptures. Four massive (12-14 foot tall) kinetic sculptures are included in the exhibition.
The Schneider Museum of Art is located on the campus of Southern Oregon University on the corner of Siskiyou Boulevard and Indiana Street, in Ashland, Oregon. Museum Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 am-4 pm, and First Fridays from 10 am-7 pm. There is a $3 suggested donation. For more information call 541-552-6245 or visit www.sou.edu/sma.
