Selections from the Permanent Collection
Ashland, Oregon 20 Years Strong. Continuing with the Schneider Museum of Art’s 20th anniversary celebration the new exhibition features Selections from the Permanent Collection. The exhibition opens on March 9 and continues through April 28, 2007. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 8, from 5-8 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
A major focus of the Schneider Museum’s permanent collection is works on paper. This current exhibition includes traditional drawings, lithographs, woodblock prints, and paintings. Artists represented, including many regional artists, are Martin Baer, Rick Bartow, Bruce Bayard, Eugene Bennett, Keith Boyle, Alexander Calder, Rafael Canogar, Jose Luis Cuevas, Connor Everts, George Inness, Carl Jackson, Herb Jepson, Bill Kennedy, Rico LeBrun, Philip McCracken, Jack McLarty, Waldo Peirce, Nata Piaskowski, Alon Reininger, David Siqueiros, Gwen Stone, Mark Tobey, Esteban Vincenté, and Sadao Watanabe.
The entry gallery will be devoted to a series of paintings by a group of women artists in Mithila, India acquired by SOU Emeritus Professor Betty LaDuke who was conducting research for her book, Women Artists: Multi-Cultural Visions. Used as a means to help support their families these bold, colorful paintings often depict representations of Hindu gods and goddesses. Also in the entry gallery will be masks from Mexico and New Guinea, Native American baskets and leather objects, and pre-Columbian artifacts from Costa Rica. In tribute to Bill and Florence Schneider, paintings by Waldo Peirce will be on display in the Treehaven Gallery.
Twenty years ago the Schneider Museum of Art, Southern Oregon University, opened its doors to the public thanks to the hard work and dedication of campus staff and community members. Major donations contributed to the construction of the building, as well as artworks for the permanent collection. This exhibit is a testament to the generosity of our patrons whose donations will enhance the learning and enjoyment of our students and community for many generations to come.
The Schneider Museum of Art is located on the campus of Southern Oregon University on the corner of Siskiyou Boulevard and Indiana Street, in Ashland, Oregon.
