Schneider Museum of Art
The Gallery Program
In an effort to educate and train students in the day-to-day responsibilities of museum and gallery practices the Schneider Museum of Art, in conjunction with the Art Department, offers two classes of study for the interested student.
- Gallery/Museum Practices (Art 399):
This is an introductory ‘hands-on’ class that explores the differences and similarities between art galleries and museums. Students will learn about exhibition design, gallery lighting and art preparation as well as, proper handling and care of art objects. Each student will work in one of the galleries within the Center for the Visual Arts complex and with the instructor’s guidance will learn how to properly select and install a variety of art work. In combination with the gallery work there will be lectures on the various career positions/options within an art gallery or museum. - Museum Practicum (Art 409):
This upper division class is for the serious student who wants more ‘hands-on’ experience within a contemporary art museum setting. This student will work with the museum preparator and be responsible for assigned projects and tasks at the museum. The student will assist with the preparation, installation and dismantling of the museum exhibitions and will learn the professional practices of acquiring artwork through loans, art insurance and the proper care of artwork for shipping, both nationally and internationally. The student will gain the necessary experience towards a career as a museum preparator and/or museum registrar.
