Tour Information
Docent Led Tours
Tours are available school groups and community organizations. Trained docents help all ages engage in the art experience by making art viewing a personal interaction.
Arranging a Tour
Scheduling a tour is easy! Arrange a tour for your class, club, social group, adult class or organization by calling Kim Hearon at 541/552-8248 or email her at hearonk@sou.edu or contact Mike Crane at 541/552-8484.
Tours are available Monday through Friday from 9:00-4:00, Saturday 10-4, or Sundays 12-4.
When You Have More Than One Class That Wants To Visit The Museum
We can accommodate one class at a time (24 students) in the museum. If you plan to bring two classes, or have a class with more than 24 students, we also provide a campus art tour. The students are divided into two groups and participate in both sessions. Generally these tours take 11/2 to 2 hours.
Your Tour Can Be Customized To Fit Your Needs
At your request, a docent will strategize and customize your tour to fit the needs of your class. We have pencils and clipboards available in the museum for writing and drawing activities. Let us know in advance if you'd like to have them available.
Let us know if any of your students have special needs so that we can plan ahead. Wheelchair access is available behind the museum, along with an adjacent handicapped parking space.
Preparing Students For A Museum Visit
Please discuss with your students how they should behave while on the University campus and in the museum galleries. Please stress that students may look closely, but not touch the artwork. In the galleries, students should be cautioned to not lean against walls or pedestals. Students are encouraged to engage in an active dialogue and to participate in age-appropriate learning activities in the museum. Please provide one adult chaperone for every 5 students in grades K - 2 and one adult for every 8 students in grades 3 - 8. Adult chaperones should be available to assist the docents with small group activities and to ensure appropriate student behavior.
Teacher Responsibilities
If you are running late, please call the museum to notify your docent. Before 10:00 a.m., please call Mary at 552-6246 or the museum preparator at 541-552-6247. During museum hours, you may call the front desk at 541-552-8240. Name tags to identify your students during their tour are appreciated.
Extending The Museum Visit
You may wish to extend your museum visit with lunch on campus. Students need to be supervised on the grassy lower level in front of the museum. Shouting and running are discouraged, especially on the upper plaza level. An alternative is Stevenson Union, where there is adequate facility for indoor eating. Food services are also available at Stevenson Union.
In Case Of Cancellations
If you need to cancel your museum visit, please notify us as far in advance as possible. To cancel your tour, please call 541/552-8248 or 541/552-8484.
