Kids' Corner!

Activity

Waldo Peirce's children went to the Treehaven School that was run by the Schneiders. He loved the school very much and painted pictures of the children attending classes such as the one shown in this painting.

  • Pretend you are in this class sitting at one of the desks in the painting.  Here are some questions to help you feel what it might be like going to as school like Treehaven.
    • What are you working on at your desk?
    • What kind of day is it?
    • Can you feel the sun?
    • Can you feel the wind?
    • What sounds do you hear?
    • What do you smell?
    • What do you like about being in this class?
  • Now design your own outdoor classroom. What will you include?
  • Draw a picture of your classroom. Add lots of details to give hints about what you would see, hear, smell, and do in this class.
  • Use your drawing as a plan for a painting. Use colors that make your painting come alive.
