Hiking Nez Perce Country: Natural History of Northeastern Oregon (#2251)
Spend five days in the northeastern corner of Oregon in the ancestral homeland of the Wallowa Band Nez Perce, one of the most ecologically diverse sites in North America. Study the Nez Perce in the context of geology, wildflowers, birds, butterflies, and other wildlife, in addition to the history and economy of an area known as the "Switzerland of America." Field trips range from a gondola ride at 8,200 feet to canyon bottoms lower than 1,000 feet, and include Hells Canyon, Wallowa Lake, Zumwalt Prairie, Nez Perce National Park, and the Eagle Cap Wilderness -- the largest wild area in Oregon. Bring your binoculars, camera, field guides, and your imagination!
Hiking 2-6 miles per day at varied pace. Field trip and hiking elevations range from 4,500 feet to 8,200 feet. Maximum elevation gain on any hike is 500 feet.
