Northwest Explorers from San Francisco Bay to the Columbia River (#15944)
Follow the path of European explorers from the City by the Bay to the mouth of the Columbia to relive the international fervor to claim the territory. Visit Point Reyes National Seashore where Sir Frances Drake beached his ship, and learn about the Pacific Coast’s other early explorers. Cross the Russian River en route to Fort Ross, then continue along the coast, through redwood and rain forests to Arcata, a college town first settled by miners and American explorers. Journey north along stunning Highway 101 through Redwoods National Park, and learn about Pacific Coast geology. In Coos Bay, visit Battle Rock, site of skirmishes between Native Americans and settlers, then explore Heceta Head lighthouse (named after explorer Bruno de Heceta) and Captain Cook’s Cape Perpetua. Learn about Lewis and Clark's discoveries, then cross into Washington state to mark the end of their cross-land journey and the end of the international quest to claim the Pacific Northwest.
