SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY CAMPUS:

Facilities

Elderhostel on-campus groups are housed in Cox Hall (where the Elderhostel office is located) and that building has an elevator. We think you will find our accommodations clean, comfortable, and quite satisfactory.

All of our rooms in Cox Hall have air-conditioners and large windows that let in lots of natural light and can be opened. Rooms are provided with a pillow, sheets, pillowcase, 2 bath towels and a washcloth, two blankets and bedspread. Your bed will be made up when you arrive and extra blankets and pillows will be available if you need them. A coin-operated washer and dryer are available - bring your own laundry soap and quarters. Bar soap is provided but you will need to bring shampoo. We do have irons and ironing boards for your use but please bring your own hairdryer if you use one.

Rooms with Private Bath:

Two double beds, microwave, mini-refrigerator, a table with a lamp, a dresser and private bathroom. Some rooms have a tub/ shower, others have showers only; please let us know if you have a preference.

Rooms with Shared Bath:

Rooms are set up with two single beds, a reading lamp over the beds, a desk with lamp, an overhead light, and dresser with mirror. There is both a men's and a women's bathroom on each of three floors and there are several sinks, toilets and showers in each of them. If you must be near a bathroom for medical reasons, let us know on your Personal Information Form if you need to be near the men's or the women's bathroom and we will do our best to accommodate you.

On-Campus Food Service Cascade Dining Hall

We are proud of our food service, which has often been rated the best in the higher education system. Our cafeteria offers many choices for each meal, including "heart healthy" entrees and lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and salad. As meals are cafeteria-style, you will probably be able to accommodate any special dietary needs by carefully selecting your food. However, please contact us at (800)257-0577 if you have concerns regarding your dietary requirements.

DOWNTOWN ASHLAND:

Facilities

Elderhostel programs in downtown Ashland will be staying at Ashland Springs Hotel, a beautifully renovated landmark hotel located in the heart of charming downtown Ashland. Meals are either at the hotel or at restaurants within walking distance.

Climate

Ashland's climate can be classified as typical Mediterranean: four distinct seasons with dry, hot summers and long, cool, wet winters. Rain from September through June, with occasional summer thunderstorms and light snowfall and fog in the winter. Nights, even in the summer, are significantly cooler than days. Summer days do sometimes exceed 100 degrees (typically in July and early August), while winter temperatures are in the 20-60 degree range. Spring and fall temperatures are in between, with periods of sunny, warm weather likely at anytime. SOU Weather Page

Transportation

To get to Ashland, you can fly into Medford, drive, or take a bus. Telephone numbers for transportation from airport or bus stop to campus are: Cascade Airport Shuttle (541)488-1998, Shuttlebug (541)601-1044 and Yellow Cab (541)482-3065.

If you are flying:
The Medford, Oregon airport is about 20 miles north of Ashland. Taxi service, Cascade Airport Shuttle and Shuttlebug provide door to door service between the airport and SOU in Ashland.

If you are driving:
Interstate 5 runs north/south from Ashland and is the major highway through this area. There is a secondary highway, Highway 66, which goes over the Cascade mountains to the east, toward Klamath Falls. It is a scenic, but precipitous, route. Another more roundabout way if you happen to be coming from the coastal areas is to branch off Highway 101 just north of Crescent City, California onto Highway 199. This winds along the beautiful Smith River and emerges at Grants Pass, where you may hook into I-5 south for the last hour to Ashland. Driving time from San Francisco is approximately 7½ hours; from Portland, about 6 hours.

If you are taking the bus:
Greyhound buses currently stop in Medford (approximately 20 miles north of Ashland). You can contact either a taxicab or Cascade Airport Shuttle for transportation to Ashland.

A Word About Amtrak
Passenger train service does not come to Ashland. For Ashland, the nearest rail service is Klamath Falls, Oregon, about 70 miles east of Ashland. Amtrak sometimes has bus service from Klamath Falls to Medford; please contact them directly for that information. Cascade Shuttle can transport small groups to/from Klamath Falls.
