All Workshop leaders for the Shakespeare Studies Visiting Group Program are professionals in their field with exceptional knowledge and experience working with small groups in an educational setting.  A sampling of our leaders follow:

 Sue Carney - Music of Shakespeare's Time Workshop

Sue is best known for her work as a composer, producer, and performer at the acclaimed Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where she has been regularly commissioned to create music for theater, dance, and video productions. She is also a director and founding member of the Terra Nova Consort, an ensemble dedicated to exploring the roots of today’s world music. Equally at home in modern and historic musical worlds, Carney’s performances effortlessly cover genres from jazz, blues, and rock; to flamenco, Latin and world music. Her songs & compositions likewise draw inspiration from the many musical realms she has explored in her unconventional career. Sue is currently in residence as a music instructor at Siskiyou Waldorf School, in Ashland.

 

Tasso Feldman - Stage Combat Workshop

A veteran of three seasons at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Tasso has performed in: The Seagull, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, On the Razzle and others.  2013 OSF patrons will see Tasso in The Taming of the Shrew and The Heart of Robin Hood.  In addition to earning his BFA from Boston University and working at numerous regional theatres in the United States, Tasso studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.  Tasso is certified in Advanced Single Sword (Gold) from (B.A.D.C.F.) as well as in Small Sword from Dueling Arts San Francisco.

 

Dr. Mary Z. Maher - The Play: Genre/Concept/Design/Characters, Shakespeare on Film, What Actors are Saying about Playing KING LEAR and What I Now Know About Acting Lecture/Discussions.

Dr. Mary Z. Maher is Professor Emerita from the University of Arizona, where she taught 26 years of courses and workshops in performing Shakespeare.  She was chosen for NEH seminars at the Folger Library with scholars Bernard Beckerman and Michael Goldman, received a fellowship from the American Association of University Women to write her first book, a residency at the Centro Studi Liguri in Itally to write her second book, and worked at the BBC on "The Shakespeare Plays series."  She also juries for the U.S. Dept. of Education Jacob Javits Arts scholarship and AAUW Fellowship programs.  She was invited into rehearsals in Kevin Kline's stage and TV productions of HAMLET.  She held a Distinguished Professorship in Renaissance Studies at Arizona State Univ. Her 50-plus articles document a number of Shakespeare on film performances.  She has written MODERN HAMLETS AND THEIR SOLILOQUIES, and ACTORS TALK ABOUT SHAKESPEARE, both available on amazon.com., and at the Tudor Guild bookstore.

 

Terri McMahon -  Actor's Lab and Jump Start Theatre Workshops

Terri McMahon

Terri McMahon has been an actress with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for over 18 seasons.  She has taught through the Festival's comprehensive Education program for more than 25 years.  She has also taught through Elderhostel now called Road Scholar and with Southern Oregon University's Shakespeare Studies.  Terri most enjoys  as a teacher providing the bridge for students, young and old, as they connect to William Shakespeare's plays, theater and it's one-of-a-kind storytelling and sharing storytelling in surprising ways be it physical or verbal.  Terri appears in OSF's 2010 season in THE IMAGINARY INVALID and AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY

 

Oona Meade - Theatrical Makeup, Women and Swords workshops.

Oona Johanna Meade has had over 18 years of experience in makeup, within which its span has encompassed, fashion, film, theatre, medical and day to day application.  She is also knowledgeable about hair, from wig making, styling, cutting and coloring.  Oona moved to Ashland in 2004 to accept a position in the hair and makeup room at the world renowned Shakespeare Festival.  She moved from Seattle Wa. where she had previously worked at the Seattle Opera and The Seattle Reperetory Theatre, both in hair and makeup capacities.
She now resides in Ashland, where she has her own esthetician practice called Hipmamastyling, her own skincare line called Komboona and teaches part-time at Southern Oregon University through the Shakespeare outreach program.
Her Theatre Makeup workshops cover the fundamentals of Theatre makeup giving hand-on experiences to as many young people as possible throughout workshop.  Come play and laugh with Oona.

 

Geoff Ridden -  The Play: Genre/Concept/Design/Characters Discussion & Lecture, Shakespeare on Film and Shakespeare's Language Workshops

Geoff Ridden

Geoff Ridden was a Professor of English at the University of Winchester for more than 30 years where he acted in and directed a number of Shakespeare plays.

He has been associated with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival since 2004, giving talks on the plays and also writing reviews of productions for Early Modern Literary Studies.  He has written a number of books and articles on Shakespeare, and has presented conference papers all over the world. He is currently teaching at Southern Oregon University, as well as being a regular host on Jefferson Public Radio.

 

Caroline Shaffer - Jump Start Theatre and The Actor's Lab workshops

Caroline Shaffer

Caroline has spent the better part of the last 20 years working as a professional actor in regional theatres around the country. While working in Ashland as a member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s acting company for 13 seasons, she has directed locally for Oregon Stage Works, Actor’s Theatre and Southern Oregon University’s theatre program. Caroline has taught workshops and other educational events through the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and toured west coast schools through its school visit program. She has taught and directed musical theatre locally with the Oregon Conservatory of Performing Arts and taught acting workshops at Southern Oregon University. She also designed and wrote outreach curriculum for Indiana Repertory Theatre as well as ACT in San Francisco. As an actor, she has worked in regional theatres as well as off-Broadway and at Brooklyn Academy of Music. She holds a BA from UC Berkeley and an MFA from American Conservatory Theatre.

 

Alice Risser - Ye Olde Project RunwayWorkshop



Alice has been a stitcher in the costume department at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival since 2005. She has also worked as a wardrobe technician since 2010. Over the years, she has taken on various sewing projects for other theaters including the Guthrie Theater, Portland Center Stage, La Jolla Playhouse, Portland Opera, and Willamette Repertory Theatre. She also frequently creates crafts and art for sale at local events.  Originally from New York, she received a BA in Visual Art and Classical Indian Dance at The Evergreen State College, 1995. She has worked for various health food stores and offices in San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Calistoga, and Santa Rosa, and was co-owner, with her husband, of a bakery in Talent, OR. For the past 10 years Alice has lived in Ashland, OR, and is raising three daughters.
