Present:  Cody Bustamante, Curt Whittaker, Sib Farrell, Marny Rivera, Wilkins-O'Riley Zinn, Peter Wu, Jean Maxwell, Terry Longshore, Jon Harbaugh, Lee Ayers, Mark Siders, Etsuko Fujimoto, Elena Ruggerio, Dale Vidmar, Connie Anderson, Kemble Yates, Wayne Schumacher, Mara Affre, Laura Jones, Dan Rubenson, Laura O’Bryon.

Faculty Senate viewed a video produced for Channel 10 News on the 3rd Annual Lock-in held at SOU on February 27, 2004.

 

I.          Approved Minutes of February 16, 2004

            Motion by Dale Vidmar, Second by Laura Jones with no changes.

II.         Announcements

A.     Laura Jones reported on the presentation and reception for Senator Lenn and Dixie Hannon held at SOU on February 27, 2004. There were many presentations giving praise for the Senator and his wife, and they received several plaques of recognition.

B.      Sib Farrell announced International Women's Day to be celebrated on campus on March 9th.

C.     Lee Ayers announced that Ashland High School is looking for volunteers to assist with Senior Project presentations on Friday May 21, 2004 from 1 pm to 3 pm.  There is a need to recruit 280 panelists. To volunteer, contact Sue Graham at 482-8771 , ext. 177, or email Sue.Graham@ashland.k12.or.us. 

D.     Sib Farrell reviewed the success of the Career Fair, which attracted 50 companies and 400 students.

III.       Advisory Council Report from the Faculty Senate Vice Chair: Jon Harbaugh

  1. John Richards reviewed a proposal of development of a standing committee on International Studies. The proposal will be sent to AAAC for analysis along with review of strategic initiatives.
  2. The President gave an update on the upcoming OUS Board presentation, on the Lenn and Dixie Hannon event planned for February 27th, and the honorary doctorate plans for Geraldine Ferraro at this year's graduation ceremony.
  3. The Provost discussed his membership on the "Delivery and Productivity Committee" and the "Academic Excellence and Economic Development Committee", two OUS Board Committees. Issues and concerns related to these two committees were discussed.  

IV.       Action Item

  1. Constitution Amendment for Release Time for Chair of Senate – Discussion was held on the proposal for permanent release time, a 4-credit hour equivalent, for each quarter while serving as Faculty Senate Chair. Language modifications were suggested and will be attached to the minutes from the meeting for Faculty Senate review prior to the next Senate meeting.

 VII. Discussion Items

A. Curriculum Committee – Catalog changes, discussion and votes

1.      A motion was made by Kemble Yates to approve the new courses submitted by the committee on February 16th. Dale Vidmar seconded. Motion approved: For-19, Against-0, Abstention-0.  Courses approved: Engr 374, Introduction to Materials Science; Engr 375, Thermodynamics of Materials; ENGR 474, Semiconductor Materials; Anth 464, Cultural Rights; ES111, Physical Environment I; ES 112, Physical Environment II; ES 209, Practicum; ES 210 Environmental Studies I; ES 310, Environmental Studies II; ES 399, Special Studies; ES 401 Research; ES 409, Practicum; ES 494 Environmental Studies Capstone; ES 495, Environmental Studies Honors Capstone; WS 302, Contemporary U.S. Women's Movements; and WS 417, Sexual Politics in U.S. History.

B.  Discussion was held on the progress on the Faculty Senate goals established at the beginning of the academic year. Also discussed was the role of Faculty Senate in the context of change issues and in governance practices. Discussion will continue at the next Faculty Senate meeting.
