Schuman Collection of Musical Instruments

Through the generosity of Jack Schuman of Phoenix, Oregon and Dorinda Schuman of Sun City West, Arizona, residents of southern Oregon, visitors to the region and students and faculty at SOU will soon have access to the Schuman Collection of Musical Instruments, one of the world's largest and most unique private collections of musical instruments, which will be housed in the Music Building on the SOU campus.

"The Schuman Collection rivals many musical instrument collections at major museums, and will bring long term benefits to our students and university. The collection contains rare and valuable instruments that are known internationally by museums, collectors and scholars. The historical instruments in the collection complement the region's renown for Shakespeare and the university's own Shakespeare studies program, and will draw both musicians and scholars to the university," said Dan Morris, Interim Dean of Arts and Letters.

We Need Your Support

Dr. Schuman and a team from Southern Oregon University have begun planning the establishment of the Schuman Collection at Southern Oregon University. We've selected a site and drawn up plans for remodeling.

The next step is identification of funds for renovation, preservation, curatorial support and curriculum development through grant and private support.

If you would like more about the Schuman Collection and how you can help, contact Vicki Purslow, Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences: 552-6519 or email PurslowV@sou.edu.
