Because homeless students are often behind their peers academically and developmentally, we provide tutoring at elementary schools and homeless shelters (as needed).

Please briefly describe the kind of practicum you provide for undergraduate psychology students.  To be a helper during Tuesday Night High School Youth Group (2.5 hrs).  To be a helper duirng Wednesday Night Middle School Youth Group (2 hrs). 

Are there any specific tests, evaluations, or documentation needed in applying for placement with your organization?  A youth worker is required ot turn in a youth worker application that asks for their social security number in order to do a national criminal background check.  Two references will be checked.  They have to sign and date their name having read our sexual misconduct policy.  And lastly, they will be interviewed by Jeremy Hascall.

Mediation programs include Community Mediation and Victim-Offender Mediation. Mediation is provided by a corps of mediators certified according to standards set in the Oregon Administrative Rules.

Mediation certification helpful (SOU Extended campus programs has certification program cross-listed with several departments), though not required. Course work in communication/counseling may be helpful, but not required. Patience and respect for confidentiality are required. CDRP periodically offers intake and case development training and basic mediation certification training. Fees may be associated with training and scholarships may be available to committed volunteers/practicum students.

Please briefly describe the kind of practicum you provide for undergraduate psychology students.Students typically begin with office and intake and case development tasks and may be asked to work on a variety of mediation and program-related tasks while in training. Students who successfully complete mediation training and required observations may be assigned mediation with an experienced co-mediator.

Callers who are emotionally distressed are first to deal with their feelings.We work with callers to assess how their needs might be met or how their problems can be solved. After resolution is reached, we refer callers to human services agencies that may be able to help. Helpline provides 24-hour access to Dunn House and Rape Crisis. Helpline also has a reassurance service that calls elderly clients every few days to check on their safety and well being.

Please briefly describe the kind of practicum you provide for undergraduate psychology students.  We are in need of volunteers in the following programs: Children’s Program—playing games, doing arts and crafts with the kids and giving moms a break.
Court Advocacy—helping victims prepare for Restraining Orders and other protective orders and supporting them through the Court procedures.
Shelter Volunteers—taking crisis calls, welcome new residents and peer counseling.                                                                                             

Specialty Volunteers—gardening, assist with trainings, volunteer recruitment, office help, etc.

Volunteers and Practicum students do much of the same work as staff, such as peer counseling and listening. We provide all of the necessary training but do ask for a 6 month commitment

Jackson County CASA ( Court Appointed Special Advocate)

Please briefly describe the kind of work that the agency does: CASA volunteers receive 30-40 hours of training, are sworn in by the court, and are assigned to represent (in court) the best interest of an abused or neglected child. Court Appointed Special Advocates are parties to the case with the attorneys and social workers. They investigate and assess the needs of a child and make their recommendations to a judge.

What length of commitment do you require or prefer of practicum students? For the life of the case. This could be up to 2 years.

How many hours a week do you require or prefer? Initial involvement during the investigation period can involve up to 15 hours in the first month. Subsequent monitoring requires considerably less phone calls, court appearances, and visitation of the child.

What academic or related experience do you require of the undergraduate practicum students (year in school, specific classes, previous work or training, etc.)? Practicum students should be in their junior year or 21 years old. Good communication skills are required as well as a strong sense of commitment and the ability to follow through.

Please briefly describe the kind of practicum you provide for undergraduate psychology students.As Court Appointed Special Advocates, volunteers learn first hand the workings of our social service systems and courtroom procedures. They are trained in the dynamics of child abuse, as well as development psychology and theories of attachment, separation and loss. They will network with foster parents, social workers, defense and district attorneys, mental health and medical professionals, law enforcement and parole and probation officers. Students learn good communication, negotiation, and interviewing skills. They become expert observers and objective writers. They work as a paraprofessional in the legal and social service system in Jackson County. They are highly respected by the court and make a tremendous difference in the life of an abused or neglected child.

It is offered 4 times a year. Classes are 4 hours a week for 7 weeks. We require completion of an application, interview process and a criminal history check. We also check all references offered.

What academic or related experience do you require of the undergraduate practicum students (year in school, specific classes, previous work or training, etc.)? Sophomore or higher. Some Criminology would be helpful, but not mandatory.

Please briefly describe the kind of practicum you provide for undergraduate psychology students.Students are exposed to criminal offenders in a variety of situations, including general supervision. We offer students the opportunity to participate in cognitive behavioral change programs, as facilitated by our department to offenders. Students are offered extensive training and co-facilitator experience in these programs and are introduced to the daily work place environment of this profession.

Are there any specific tests, evaluations, or documentation needed in applying for placement with your organization?Students must NOT be on parole or probation, and mush have NO criminal convictions within the last year, no exceptions will be made. There is an application, criminal reference check, and 1 on 1 orientation.

Family mediations are often in the afternoon or early evenings.

Some conflict resolution training or a willingness to participate in our training is needed to be a volunteer for the education or victim/offender program.

Students wanting 2 or 3 credits will apply to become WinterSpring volunteers, and as such, follow typical requirements (below). Beginning practicum volunteers do various combinations of the following: in-office work, one-on-one client support, bereavement­ class observation and participation, advanced training in children's program or teen group facilitation, and field observation with experienced speakers and facilitators.
