Strategic Planning

A Message to the Campus Community from President Mary Cullinan

March 24, 2008

Welcome to the SOU Strategic Planning Web Site.

During this academic year, several campus groups have been working on focused plans that cut across disciplinary boundaries and were already being developed in fall 2006.

As these plans are drafted, we will use the web for disseminating drafts and receiving comments, and we will use existing groups (such as UPC, the Academic Senate, and vice presidential councils) as well as other meetings to ensure face–to–face campus discussion. UPC has endorsed this approach to our planning process.

After review by the Strategic Planning group, we will post each plan on this website (see Draft Plans below) and will let the campus know that a new plan has been posted.

If you wish to comment on a plan, send your message to PresidentsOffice@sou.edu. We will periodically summarize comments and post them with the plan.

At our meeting on March 21, the Strategic Planning group emphasized the need for each plan to include quantifiable goals and a clear breakdown of costs (both of which are included in the International Recruiting plan). We also appreciate having a list of the groups and individuals that have participated in creating and reviewing the plan so far (also included in the international plan).

We agreed, too, that it would be helpful, for plans intended to increase enrollment, to have estimates for new enrollment as opposed to estimates that simply move existing students from one program to another.

In each plan, we would also like to see a grid that lays out tasks, timelines, and persons responsible for various aspects of the plan. Then, as we build a true strategic plan for the campus, we will be able to summarize more easily the action plans that will drive the overall directions of the campus.

Please understand this is a pilot process. We are endeavoring to provide opportunities for campus input that will help refine each plan. If you have suggestions for ways to improve the process, please let us know. Once again, the following individuals serve on the Strategic Planning Group: Ed Battistella, Jonathan Eldridge, Mada Morgan, David Harris, Greg Miller, Larry Blake, MaryAnn Neely, Nicole Jolly, and Vicki Purslow. I lead the group.

Thank you for your participation in this planning process.

Mary Cullinan
