Looking Forward to Fall
July 07, 2009
Dear Campus Community:
Now that we've had our Fourth of July celebrations, it seems like summer is running away before we've had time to enjoy it. Yes, fall is only weeks away.
As we work on planning for the new academic year, I went back to the cards people left on tables during our June 11 Faculty/Administrator breakfast. We asked attendees "What are you most looking forward to next year?" Many of the items people listed were the same as "What was best about this past year?". People look forward to working with students, teaching new classes, and talking with colleagues. Some folks said they're looking forward to being tenured, while others look forward to retirement. Several people wrote that they're excited to have new opportunities for collaboration and learning.
Of course, budgets are on people's minds. Some wrote that they hoped there would be stability and an "end of fiscal uncertainty." Others asked for more clarity regarding finances. Several voiced the sentiment that they didn't want to discuss budgets any more! Someone said it would be nice to think creatively without the word "budgets" dampening the conversation.
Sadly, budgets will continue to be a focus—money problems in Oregon and around the country aren't going away. However, we will continue to be creative in everything we do. We will move ahead in 09–10 with a lot of exciting work. I'm delighted to see people looking forward to implementing strategic planning and to getting more involved in SOU activities.
Folks talked about wanting to continue good communication in their departments, expanding their research, and helping reduce the University's energy consumption. They mentioned working on new programs, trying new techniques in distance learning, getting to know more faculty and staff.
Someone wants to see "more laughter, more reasons to celebrate, and more opportunities to gather as a community." Someone else wants "the best enrollment ever!"
We will have reasons to celebrate next year. We will continue lots of good work.
And, right now, these sunny days are incredible. Enjoy them!
