Reaffirming Partnership with the Universidad de Guanajuato

August 20, 2009

Dear Campus Community:

In April, SOU and Ashland hosted guests from the University and the City of Guanajuato to celebrate the first half of our 40-year partnership. Late next week, delegations from SOU and the City of Ashland will celebrate again with our friends in Guanajuato.

For SOU, this is a particularly significant visit as it will continue the remarkable planning that took place among our respective departments and faculty in the spring. The Masters in Management faculty are finishing work on a dual degree. The Psychology faculty are building on many years of partnership to increase articulation and exchanges. Arts, sciences, and social sciences faculty have projects underway that were designed during initial meetings in April.

SOU's relationship with the Universidad de Guanajuato is unique among international university partnerships; our planning this spring and summer is rooted in many years of friendship and collaboration. With the work accomplished this fall, we will increase opportunities for student and faculty exchanges, for research and funding opportunities, and for cultural exchanges. Increased collaboration between our sister universities will provide opportunities that neither institution can provide on its own.

The coming academic year will present more than its share of challenges. SOU joins universities around the state and around the nation in facing budget cuts and an uncertain economic future. Despite these challenges, we will continue to preserve and enhance our core values and the academic mission of this amazing university-including our powerful partnership with the Universidad de Guanajuato. And we will continue to develop the unique strengths of SOU.

We will have a wonderful academic year.
