Why do I need to attend New Student Orientation (NSO)?
For all new SOU students, freshmen and transfers, New Student Orientation is the beginning of the academic year and the beginning of your education at Southern Oregon University. New Student Orientation is designed to facilitate your successful transition to the University by familiarizing you with the options that are available to you as a Southern Oregon University student. New Student Orientation prepares you for your academic experience, civic engagement opportunities, and includes a full introduction to life on campus whether you reside on campus, live nearby, or commute from some distance.
I'm a transfer student. Why do I need to attend?
Specific to Southern Oregon University, New Student Orientation is designed to enhance the transfer student experience at SOU and promote successful completion of SOU degree goals.
Are parents or family members required to come to New Student Orientation with their student?
Parents and families are not required to attend NSO, but they are welcome to attend a special parent and family orientation scheduled for Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, September 24-25.
What if I have a disability and need accommodations to attend New Student Orientation events?

When can I move into my residence hall?
Residence Hall Move-In is scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, at Cox Hall. Please view the interactive Ashland campus map for the location. Students will be available to help you unload and move boxes. If you have questions about Move-In, Residential Life, or meals plans, please contact the Residential Life and Housing Office, 541-552-6371.
I'm a commuting student. May I stay on campus during New Student Orientation?
Commuting students may stay in the residence halls at no cost during NSO, September 24, 25, and 26. Please contact the Residential Life and Housing Office at 541-552-6371 for information.
How can I get more information about the New Student Orientation schedule?
A detailed NSO schedule will be mailed to your permanent address in August.
Do I need to RSVP?
There is no need to RSVP. On Thursday, September 24, check in at the Art Building in the Center for Visual Arts (CVA). To locate the Art Building place your cursor over the "Art" link on the interactive Ashland campus map.
When can I buy textbooks?
After you register for class, purchase textbooks online at the Textbook Reservations link at the SOU Bookstore. The SOU Bookstore will also be open extended hours on Sunday, September 27, Noon to 3 p.m.
