Southern Oregon University

Department of Performing Arts: Music

The Music Department at SOU has a variety of ensembles for students to participate in. These ensembles are open to all students on campus regardless of academic major. In fact, many of the performers in these ensembles are not music majors and perform in the ensembles just for the experience and enjoyment of performing music.

Music majors are, of course, required to participate in certain ensembles based upon their major instrument and scholarship requirements.

In May 2006, Dr. Paul French conducted the SOU Chamber Choir, Southern Oregon Repertory Singers, and the Mozart Festival orchestra in the west coast premiere of the Robert Levin's new edition of Mozart's "Mass in c minor". Here is a review of that performance:

"I sat in total amazement and delight at the spectacular and glorious sound of this group. It measured up to anything I have heard in any concert hall... anywhere. The discipline and deep musicality drawn from the chorus by Dr. French filled me with joy, and the great music they produced rang in my head for days following the performance.

In April 2006 the SOU Chamber Choir, at the invitation of the University of Guanajuato, performed a series of concerts for the Festival Cultural Universitario in Penjamo, Celaya, Yuriria and Guanajuato, Mexico. Photos of the choir in Guanajuato.
