Department of Performing Arts: Music
The SOU Jazz Collective concert features guest artist Tony Hayes. An international performer, Hayes joined forces with Grammy-winning percussionist Bobby Thomas, Jr. formerly of “Weather Report," to collaborate on Thomas' first solo album, “Outside The Grid." Hayes arranged, produced and played tenor and soprano saxophones on the recording. He also formed his own group, “Big Cypress,” with piano great Dave Siegel. The group featured all original material and played various South Florida festivals and clubs, including Jazziz Café and Arturo Sandoval’s Jazz Club in North Miami Beach. In 2006, Hayes traveled to Switzerland as a featured singer and sax player with a thirty-piece orchestra at a music festival and education week called “Jazzaar.” Upon his return to Florida, he played sax with the reggae pioneer, Mikey Dread, who took Hayes to Los Angeles, Maui and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Hayes currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina, and works as a performer, teacher, and studio musician.
