Why SOU Department of Music?

  • Superb faculty
  • Focus on undergraduate education
  • Talented students
  • Great facilities
  • A vibrant artistic community in a beautiful setting

Fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the SOU Department of Music offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with optional intense study in Music Business, Music Composition, Music Instruction, or Music Performance.

SOU's high level of instruction, together with relatively low tuition, prompted the New York Times to list SOU as one of twenty "hidden gems" of undergraduate education.

Faculty

The Department of Music faculty are dedicated to promoting a positive, student-centered environment in which students - by performance, creative activity, research, scholarship, and teaching opportunities - develop the skills, independence of thought, and discipline to fulfill their musical aspirations. A learning-centered environment with a talented, student-focused faculty are two of the biggest reasons why SOU is the right choice for many young talented musicians.

The internationally renowned music faculty performs and clinics in North America and throughout the world.

Small Class Size

With a 19:1 student-teacher ratio, students receive excellent instruction in small classes. The Department of Music offers music majors and minors an integrated curriculum of study designed to teach the varied skills necessary for a professional career in music, and to develop the student’s understanding and appreciation for the art of music. Course work combines class and individual instruction by nationally and internationally renowned artists with innovative computer-aided instruction.

Facilities

The department's comprehensive facilities contain a digital lab with Macintosh computers, synthesizers, music software, listening equipment; two concert pipe organs, digital piano lab and a recital hall with outstanding acoustics. SOU's Music Recital Hall has been acclaimed as being one of the best in the Pacific Northwest. Although it seats 436 people, it has a sense of intimacy.

Cultural Opportunities

Students at SOU also benefit from the many cultural opportunities available to artists in the Rogue Valley. SOU is home to the Rogue Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Music Concerts. Within the Rogue Valley resides the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Britt Festival, Rogue Opera, professional musical theatre (Rogue Music Theatre and Oregon Cabaret Theatre) and numerous musical and theatrical groups.
