Full-time and adjunct members of the Southern Oregon University Music Faculty formed the SOU Faculty Brass Quintet in 2000. The quintet is dedicated to the performance of the great heritage of repertoire for brass quintet as well as the commission and performance of new compositions for quintet. During the 2005-2006 season the quintet premiered seven new compositions, featured music from the Western Hemisphere, and featured composers from the Southern Oregon region.
In addition, the ensemble is dedicated to providing master classes and workshops for young brass students and is available for in school concerts clinics and programs. All members are active private teachers in the Southern Oregon area and all are members of the Rogue Valley Symphony Orchestra.

Bruce Dresser has performed in the Bay Area as principal trumpet of the Peninsula Symphony and Redwood Symphony, and as a member of the West Bay Opera orchestra. In the Rogue Valley he is principal trumpet of the Rogue Valley Symphony and performs with the Jefferson Baroque Orchestra. He performed with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival during the 2001 season playing in the orchestra for Enter the Guardsman. Dresser has also performed with the Britt Festival Orchestra. Dresser is a founding member of Jefferson State Brass, a 10-piece brass ensemble specializing in the performance of large brass works and plays trumpet in the local swing band, Leslie Kendall and the Jump Daddies. Dresser teaches trumpet privately and has adjudicated at band and solo and ensemble festivals locally and in the Bay Area. He holds a Bachelor of Music, San Francisco State University. More info...
Cynthia Hutton is an Associate Professor of Music and has been Director of Band Activities at Southern Oregon University since 1994. In addition to these responsibilities, she is the Conductor and Artistic Director of the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon Association and is active throughout Oregon as a guest clinician and conductor. Prior to her appointment at Southern Oregon, Hutton was the Director of Bands at the University of California, San Diego. She holds degrees in Music Education from California University, Fullerton, Masters in Horn Performance from the University of California, San Diego, and a Doctorate in Conducting from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
As a horn artist, Dr. Hutton performs frequently with members of the Southern Oregon University music faculty, and is a member of the Rogue Valley Symphony Orchestra. She has performed with numerous organizations including the San Diego Symphony, the San Diego Opera, the Denver Symphony, and the Boulder Philharmonic. In March, 2001 Dr. Hutton was a featured soloist at the Northwest Horn Workshop at the University of Oregon, Eugene. More info...
Mark Eliot Jacobs, instructor in low brass at Southern Oregon University, is the principal trombone in the Rogue Valley Symphony. He plays trombone and euphonium with various performance organizations throughout Southern Oregon and Northern California. He also plays early low brass instruments: the sackbut, the serpent, the English bass horn, and the ophicleide. Mark teaches low brass privately in Medford and Ashland, Oregon. He completed a Doctor of Music degree in composition at Northwestern University in 1986 where he studied with Ben Johnston and Stephen Syverud. Areas of interest include electronic and computer music. Mark studied trombone with Dr. Hugo Magliocco at Western Illinois University from 1974 to 1982. More info...
Mike Knox began playing tuba in 1958 at Jefferson School in Medford, Oregon. He was selected principal tuba with the Oregon All State Band in 1966, principal tuba of the All Northwest Band in 1967, and principal tuba of the All American Youth Band in 1967. Knox earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Minor in Music from Southern Oregon College in 1972. He studied with Ira Lee at University of Oregon, Von Miller now of the University of Alberta, and Marvin Belford of Southern Oregon College. While attending graduate school at Michigan State University School of Social Work, he studied with Michael Sherline and was the principal tuba with the Lansing City Band. Knox has played with the Rogue Valley Symphony for 31 years and is a 35-year member of the Ashland City Band. He is currently Chair of the Ashland City Band board of directors.
Markus Tannenholz received a K.A. (B.M. equivalent) studying historic performance on baroque/natural trumpet from the Music Conservatory of Cologne, Germany. While at the New England Conservatory, he studied with Charles Schlueter, Principal Trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was also a student of noted early music scholar Edward Tarr in Basel, Switzerland. Currently, he is playing with the Rogue Valley Symphony as well as with the Jefferson Baroque Orchestra.
