McNair Scholar Anita Hagy Ferguson

I am a senior at Southern Oregon University. I am working toward a bachelor of science in Human Communication, with a minor in Philosophy, and I plan to graduate Summa Cum Laude in June, 2010. My undergraduate focus areas are intercultural and international communication, conflict resolution, mass media studies and philosophy.

After graduation, I plan to pursue a doctoral degree in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences or International Relations.
I am interested in studying environmental conflict resolution, ethics and communication about environmental issues. I would like to explore global security and policy issues as they relate to resource scarcity and migration situations linked to climate change, and I am also drawn to the topic areas of mass media communication, international discourse, environmental decision making and international agreement compliance.

A southern Oregon native, I grew up with an inherent love of the outdoors. Though I spent many years working and attending school in San Francisco, my connection with nature has persisted, and protection of natural resources and wildlife remains very important to me. I believe in the dream of reconciliation between cultures and countries, and between people and the Earth.

I have a professional background in project and event management, non profit performing arts development and photography and documentary film production. I am also a certified EFL/ESL teacher. My work has given me the opportunity to travel throughout the United States and internationally. I have studied abroad in Dublin, Ireland and traveled to several countries in Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and the South Pacific. My travels and work have instilled in me sensitivity to other cultures and a passion for continued global interaction.

Anita Hagy Ferguson On LocationI share my success with my family and friends who have supported and encouraged me throughout my academic journey with patience, perseverance and humor. I thank them for their loving attention to my daughter; for it is largely because of them that she has blossomed and will grow into a kind, sensitive and responsible global citizen.

The outstanding faculty of SOU have impacted my life through their teachings and presented me with great opportunity. I am especially thankful to the Department of Communication for awarding me the Leon Mulling Emeritus Communication Scholarship and to Dr. Jody Waters and Dr. Dee Southard for their tireless guidance and support. I also thank the Ford Family Foundation and the American Association of University Women, Medford Chapter for awarding me significant scholarships and enabling my promising future.

Mentor: Dr. Jody Waters, Communication
