McNair Scholar Althea Godfrey
After working for three decades as a journalist and non-profit administrator, I returned to school to complete my degree. Beyond achieving high marks, I found new ambition through my academic coursework in Sociology. After graduating from SOU in December 2009, I want to continue my studies in culture and social change as they relate to the changing environment. This intersection of information is vital for sound public policy in the future.
Successful societies need to be both livable and sustainable. This cannot be achieved without engaging the will and willingness of people. The first step in gaining support is to understand what people know, what they believe and why they believe it. Before we can communicate on climate change issues—or about any contested social policy—a sound understanding of beliefs must be accumulated.
As a journalist, creative writer and in community organizations I have striven to provide the public with the best science-based information. As a social scientist, I hope to contribute further understanding about the ways we interact with the natural world within the discipline and to the public. A Ph.D. will allow me to contribute as a researcher, instructor and communicator toward these goals. I am excited and committed to these plans.
