I am Kiara Moore and I am earning a baccalaureate of science degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice, with a minor in Psychology. I anticipate graduating cum laude in August 2014.
I am interested in the topical areas of adolescent identity development, juvenile delinquency, violence prevention, youth empowerment, group & gang affiliation, social psychology, and violence & victimology. I am particularly riveted by exploring and implementing research on how educating youth on various criminological topics can increase or decrease the amount of delinquency in a community. During the summer of 2013, as a McNair Summer Internship, I will conduct a field-based research project in collaboration with a non-profit organization to enhance one of their youth development programs.
I am proud to be a Diversity Scholar at Southern Oregon University and as part of that program I have engaged in tutoring and mentoring middle school and high school students in various academic subjects. For 3 consecutive years I have been an active member of the SOU Women’s Basketball Team, and I strive to be a positive role model.
After completing my undergraduate studies and graduating from SOU, I am eager to continue my academic journey and refining my knowledge of Criminology & Criminal Justice and its research methodologies by attending a Criminology doctoral program which has the possibility of emphasis on juvenile delinquency and gang affiliation. Upon completion of a doctoral degree, I hope to have the opportunity to use my post-baccalaureate education in service to the education of other by becoming a faculty member teaching at a four-year university and to continue to engage in applied research with my local community and non-profit organizations. Also I hope help improve public policy by evaluating specific programs based on program efficiency.
