Southern Oregon University to Join the Talloires Network

05/04/2007

Southern Oregon University recently joined the Talloires Network, by signing the Talloires Declaration, making a commitment to civic engagement, and sharing experiences with others for the exchange of ideas, understanding, and for fostering collective action.

The Talloires Network is a collective of individuals and institutions committed to promoting the civic roles and social responsibilities of higher education. It was launched at the Talloires Conference 2005, convened by Tufts University President Lawrence S. Bacow at the Tufts European Center in Talloires, France, September 15-17, 2005.  The Talloires Network is in the process of developing a common Global Project to elevate literacy and education around the world. Universities on all continents will collaborate on this initiative, working to maximize their individual and collective impacts.

For the last several years, Southern Oregon University has been expanding its involvement in civic engagement for the students, faculty, and staff.  Southern Oregon University is dedicated to strengthening the civic role and social responsibility of the institution and its students.

Southern Oregon University believes it is the responsibility as educators and community-members, to foster in faculty, staff, and students a sense of social responsibility and a commitment to the social good, which is central to the success of a democratic and just society.
