SOU's Espinoza Named to Daktronics-NAIA All-American Student-Athlete Team

(Ashland, Ore.) – Southern Oregon University’s Matt Espinoza was recently named to Daktronics-NAIA All-American Student-Athlete Team. Espinoza was chosen as one of over 150 NAIA Division I and II men’s basketball players to be named to the team after having a successful senior season of basketball and earning a GPA of 4.0 last term and a cumulative GPA of 3.67.
During his senior season of basketball, Espinoza was able to lead the team in three-point percentage (.505), three-points made (49), and three’s made per game (2.1). Not only did Espinoza lead the team in these categories, but also he set a new Southern Oregon University record in three-point percentage in a season, surpassing the former mark of .462 set by Jerome Wright (1986-87). Espinoza’s shooting from beyond the arc also ranked as the No. 2 player in NAIA Division II men’s basketball in three-point percentage.
He drained 49 of his 97 attempts in treys helping him to a 234-point total for the 2006-07 season. He shot 77-for-162 (.475) from the field while also making 31 of his 43 free throw attempts. Battling through injuries his senior season, Espinoza was featured in only 23 games, where he averaged 10.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. He tallied 453-points in his two years as a Raider, 282-points which came from three-point range.
