Laura Rost receives the Faith Gabelnick Student Leadership Award
04/04/2007
The Oregon Campus Compact has recently named Southern Oregon University’s, Laura Rost as the winner of the statewide Faith Gabelnick Student Leadership Award. This is the highest student award that ORCC gives each year.
ORCC promotes civic and community engagement as a core educational approach for student development as citizens, leaders and lifelong learners. The ORCC encourages, supports and leverages the work of institutions to educate responsible citizens and caring leaders through service. Compact members believe that students’ direct contact with social problems encourages critical thinking and civic responsibility, fostering an ethic of life-long service.
Laura will be receiving $200 ($100 of which she is to donate to a non-profit of her choice) and paid travel expenses to the awards luncheon in Portland on April 21.
Laura is a current senior majoring in Environmental Studies. Laura’s passion for the environment has also compelled her to participate in many extra-curricular activities both on and off-campus. Laura founded and has been active in the Environmental Studies Club at SOU for several years and is currently an officer. She is also the Co-director of Ecology Center of the Siskiyous. She is also a Campus Ambassador for SOU and was selected to attend the National Education for Women Conference in 2005. In addition to this Laura has volunteered at the N. Mountain Park doing wetlands restoration and helped organize the last two Earth Day celebrations.
