400 Years of the Telescope Showing at SOU (3/2/09)

The Schneider Museum of Art at Southern Oregon University (SOU) is partnering with the SOU College of Arts and Sciences and Southern Oregon Public Television (SOPTV) to present the PBS documentary 400 Years of the Telescope Friday, March 13 at 3 pm in the Meese Auditorium in the Center for the Visual Arts. The event is free and open to the public.

In addition to the screening, there will be a live discussion with producer Kris Koenig and writer Donald Goldsmith. Following the program will be a reception next door in the Schneider Museum of Art and a viewing of the exhibition “Arp’s Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies.”

Both the Arp’s exhibition and 400 Years of the Telescope are part of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, an initiative of UNESCO, the International Astronomical Union, the American Astronomical Society and hundred of other partners around the world. The purpose of all the programs is to direct the public’s attention toward the heavens and raise awareness of astronomy during 2009, the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of a telescope.

The Meese Auditorium is located in the Art Building at Indiana Street and Siskiyou Boulevard in Ashland. Parking is available behind the museum and in nearby paid parking lots. For more information, please call 541-552-6245 or visit sou.edu/sma.
