Poetry and Music at the Schneider Museum of Art (2/27/09)

The Schneider Museum of Art at Southern Oregon University (SOU) will present a reading by Sacramento poet and poly-artist D.R. Wagner, to be followed by a performance of Ashland’s Sonoluminescence on Thursday, March 5 at 7:30 pm. Admission is free, but seating is limited.

D.R. Wagner is a poet, visual artist, musician and lecturer in environmental design at UC Davis. He will be reading from his latest book of poems, “Where the Stars are Kept.” Wagner has published more than 20 books and chapbooks of poetry and letters.

He has been a fixture in Sacramento for years as a community organizer, founder of alternative art galleries, teacher at both Sacramento State and UC Davis, and the creator of performance opportunities for artists of all persuasions to share their work. Wagner’s personal investigation often explores what lies between the realms of visual art and poetry, and he has shown and performed regionally and nationally.

Sonoluminescence’s five creative artists improvise together in an experimental environment to explore the boundaries of time, light, sound and space. The experience is created in the moment of each performance, which consists of a variety of segments: duets, trios and full ensemble, within which anything could happen. Performers include Todd Barton (EVI, synthesizer and shakuhachi), Terry Longshore (percussion and handsonic), Suzee Grilley (dance), Michael Maag (video projection and lighting), and Bruce Bayard (modified cello).

Todd Barton is the resident composer for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and director of composition studies at Southern Oregon University.

Terry Longshore is chair of the SOU Music Department and is active as a performer, composer, and educator of percussion, performing internationally and throughout the United States.

Suzee Grilley is widely known in the Rogue Valley as a dancer, choreographer and founder of The DanceSpace and the Suzee Grilley Dance Ensemble.

Michael Maag has collaborated with Barton, Longshore and Grilley on a variety of creative endeavors for the last six years. He is a freelance visualist and lighting designer. Maag is also the lighting department manager at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Bruce Bayard is a well-known local designer and self-taught visual artist producing inkjet prints of his electronic collages.

The Schneider Museum of Art is located at Indiana Street and Siskiyou Boulevard in Ashland. Parking is available behind the museum and in nearby paid parking lots. For more information, please phone 541-552-6245 or visit sou.edu/sma/.
