Internationally Renowned Pianist to perform at SOU (1/26/09)

U.S.-Mexican pianist Ana Cervantes, acclaimed by critics on both sides of the Atlantic, will present a music recital of Rumor de Páramo (Murmurs from the Wasteland) on Tuesday, February 10, at 8 pm in the SOU Music Recital Hall. Admission is $15 (free with student ID). For more information, call 541-552-6101.

Rumor de Páramo is the international commissioning project, spanning three years and two CDs, in which Cervantes asked 23 composers from five countries for a short piece for piano solo as homage to landmark Mexican writer and photographer Juan Rulfo. In Cervantes’s recital, SOU Spanish and English students will read excerpts from Rulfo’s writing, joining the magic of his words with the compelling music of composers from Mexico, the U.S., Spain, England and Brazil.

Cervantes has been praised internationally as a “physical, emotional performer with mastery of tone and color” (Newark Star-Ledger, USA). She is an alumna of Bard College and became a Fulbright Garcia-Robles Senior Scholar in 1999. In 2002, she received an Individual Artist grant from the Bossak-Heilbrun Charitable Foundation to continue her work in music. Cervantes received another grant in 2003 from Conaculta (Mexican National Foundation for the Arts) to make the CD Agua y Piedra: Recent Music of Mexico, which was well received by the national press in Mexico, the U.K. and the U.S.

Cervantes will spend several days before her performance in interdisciplinary activities with SOU students and faculty.
