SOU to cover shortfall in student grants (1/14/09)

Southern Oregon University (SOU) will make up the lack of funding for Oregon Opportunity Grant recipients recently announced. The decision affects approximately 1,200 students and could amount to approximately $90,000 in awards.

The state recently announced that, due to a drop in income tax and lottery receipts brought on by the recession, it would reduce support to tens of thousands of Oregon college students who receive the awards. The reduction amounts to $80 for full-time and $40 for part-time students who began receiving the grants last fall. The funding adjustments would occur in spring term of this year.

“In spite of budget challenges, it’s critical that we continue to support our students’ pursuit of their educational dreams,” says SOU Dean of Enrollment Management Peg Blake. “It’s the right thing to do.”

Funding for the student grants will come from SOU tuition remissions. “This is a one time allocation,” says Blake.
