SOU Counter-Terrorism / Crime Scene Investigation (CT/CSI) Project
By Priscilla Oppenheimer, SOU Computer Science Department:
We hear about the threat of terrorism every day, but how many of us have had the chance to do something about it? During fall term 2006, about thirty-five students and professors got a unique opportunity to investigate a simulated terrorism crime. As participants in the first ever SOU Counter-Terrorism/Crime Scene Investigation (CT/CSI) project, the students and professors learned about the many facets of fighting terrorism, including writing search warrants, gathering evidence, and using high-tech chemical and computer forensics to analyze evidence.
Starting in the summer of 2006, professors from the Criminology and Criminal Justice, Computer Science, and Chemistry Departments started planning a simulated terrorism crime. The professors planted evidence on computers, gathered explosive residue, and assembled glassware used in drug manufacturing . . . (story continued). . . Is there enough evidence to bring the suspects to justice?
