Web Resources and Guidelines

Student Web Pages

Every SOU student has a Web page automatically created for them. Student Web pages can be viewed at: www.sou.edu/~username, replacing username with your actual username.

Student Web pages must follow these guidelines:

  1. Web pages must be consistent with the campus policies outlined in the SOU Student Handbook, especially those concerning the “Computing Services Acceptable Use Policy” and “Copyright Awareness.” Of special note, it is strictly prohibited to publish on any student Web page:
    • Unauthorized reproductions of copyrighted material
    • Obscene, lewd, or sexually harassing images or text
    • Materials that are slanderous or defamatory in nature, or that otherwise violate existing laws or the University’s codes of conduct
    • Materials designed as a commercial activity such as creating products or services for sale. (Personal products or services for sale may be advertised in the SOU eClassifieds.)
  2. The following disclaimer should appear on all personal Web pages:
  3. The views and opinions expressed in this page are strictly those of the page author and are not official statements of Southern Oregon University.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I edit my Web page?
Locate and open the directory (folder) at the root of your F: drive called “public_html”. The default page created for you is named “index.html”. You may change this file (consistent with the policies outlined on the page), but don’t change the name. Use a text editor, or any tool you prefer, to edit the index page and to add or edit other pages and graphics.
How long will my pages remain on the Web?
Student Web pages, like all student computer accounts, will be purged one term after the student fails to re-register for courses. If you want to keep your work, you will need to copy it to a removable drive.
What else should I know?
Keep your web directory organized. Since the public_html directory is part of your F: drive, anything you publish there is part of your disk quota. You’ll want to keep file sizes small, and delete anything you don’t need.
