Web Resources and Guidelines
Faculty Web Pages
Faculty have a number of options for Web pages:
Professional Profile Page
These pages are part of your department's Web site and use the standard SOU design. They are part of the public Web site and may be featured with links on the home page. At minimum this page should contain:
- A recent photograph.
- Your office location, phone number, and email address.
- Your professional credentials as they appear in the SOU catalog.
- A list of the subjects you teach.
Optionally, these pages may also contain:
- A list of your professional publications.
- Your research projects and interests.
- The professional affiliations.
Your professional profile page should be named with your SOU network username and placed in a folder called "faculty" in your department's Web site. For example, if your username is smithf and you are in the English department, your page would be at /english/faculty/smithf.html. This will allow your page to be located programatically from anywhere on the Web site.
Here are a few good examples of professional profile pages:
Class Web Pages
Faculty should use the Blackboard system for class Web pages whenever possible. Our students expect class pages to be in Blackboard. The exception to this may be if you need pages that are viewable by the general public. Since Blackboard requires a login, only students enrolled in your class can access your Blackboard classes. For class pages outside of Blackboard, follow the instructions for personal pages below. To learn more about Blackboard visit our Blackboard support site.
Personal Web Pages
All SOU faculty, staff, and students can create personal Web pages. You may create these pages in your home directory (a.k.a. F: drive), in a directory called public_html. This must contain a file called index.html, which is your home page. To create or edit your personal home page, you must edit the file F:\public_html\index.html. You can then access your home page with the URL http://home.sou.edu/~username, where the username is your SOU network username. Note that your site can also be reached at www.sou.edu/~username, and campus.sou.edu/~username. They all redirect to the same site.
Your personal pages do not have to follow the standard SOU design. You are free to design your pages to your own liking. You are free to include the content of your choosing within the limits of appropriate SOU policies (please see the Acceptable Use Policy).
You can create as many pages as you like in your public_html folder. Just be sure to name the files with an .html extension so that they display on the Web. Keep in mind that these pages and any supporting graphics or PDFs you store here contribute to your total disk usage.
Personal Blogs
All SOU faculty, staff, and students can create their own blog. This is still considered experimental, however if many people make use of this service we will certainly continue it. You can create a blog by going to http://blogs.sou.edu and following the instructions. After it is created, your blog will be accessible at http://blogs.sou.edu/username. Once again, please use common sense and follow all appropriate SOU policies when posting to your blog.
