Student Information System (SIS)
Banner SIS
Banner SIS - Basics
Prerequisites: Faculty and Staff only. Must have a Banner SIS account. Pre-registration is required. *
The Banner Student Information System (SIS) is the software system used to administer student information. All other related Student Information System applications pull data from this system. It supports the full range of functions necessary for student administration including: creation of catalog information, scheduling of classes, recruitment, admissions, residential housing, registration, advising, academic history, degree audit reporting and accounts receivable. Almost all student information data entry is done in this system. Banner SIS consists of menus and forms (an online document where you can enter and look up information in the database). You can do all data maintenance functions in this system except enter grades (SISWeb for Faculty must be used by faculty to enter grades). In Banner SIS, you can change a student's advisor and/or major; assign a junior or senior plan to a student; print unofficial transcripts; view student information such as academic history, registration, demographic, and admission; view class rosters; view faculty schedules; view course enrollment, and more.
This course will introduce you to the Banner Student Information System (SIS). You will learn how to navigate through the Banner SIS forms, view a class roster, view a list of advisees or majors, view address information, view faculty and student schedules, and more.
Banner SIS - Advising
Prerequisites: Faculty and Staff only. Must have a Banner SIS account. Pre-registration is required. *
This course will teach you to use the advising related forms available in the Banner Student Information System. You will learn how to enter advising plans, change a student's major/minor/concentration, change a student's advisor, view a list of advisees, view a list of majors, and print unofficial transcripts. You should have basic Banner SIS skills before taking this class.
Banner SIS - Class Scheduling Basics
Prerequisites: Department Schedulers only. Must have a Banner SIS account. Pre-registration is required. *
This course teaches participants how to schedule state support classes taught at the Ashland campus for their department. The target audience for this session is the new scheduler who has never used the SOU departmental class scheduling software and the person who wants a very thorough review. This will be reflected in the content and pace of this session. You will learn how to create a new schedule, copy a schedule from a previous term, run reports, define footnotes, assign instructors, and all other scheduling activities.
Banner SIS - Class Scheduling What's New
Prerequisites: Department Schedulers only. Must have a Banner SIS account. Pre-registration is required. *
This course introduces recent changes to the departmental class scheduling system at SOU. The target audience has experience with the departmental class scheduling system and wants only to know about what is different from last year.
Banner SIS - Reports
Prerequisites: Faculty and Staff only. Must have a Banner SIS account. Pre-registration is required. *
In this class you will learn how to run different Banner SIS reports such as class roster reports, section tally reports, currently enrolled advisees reports and much more. You should have basic Banner SIS skills before taking this class.
Data Warehouse
SIS Data Warehouse
Prerequisites: Faculty and Staff only. Must have a Banner SIS account. Pre-registration is required. *
The SIS Data Warehouse contains a subset of data from the Banner Student Information System and combines it with a user friendly, graphical query/reporting tool (BI/Query). This class will teach participants to perform queries on the Warehouse and format the results as reports, labels, or ASCII text to be exported to other applications. Users will be able to get information such as how many English majors graduated last year, how many students live in the dorms, and more.
BI/Query Reports
Prerequisites: Faculty and Staff only. Must have a Data Warehouse account. Familiarity with BI/Query software. Pre-registration is required. *
This course will teach participants familiar with BI/Query how to turn query results into formatted reports. In this course you will manipulate the results of a query from SIS to learn data sorting, the use of breaks to compute intermediate sums and averages, modification of the report layout including reordering and resizing of columns, choosing fonts and sizes for data, how to choose summary vs detail reports, and other techniques equally applicable to FIS, HRIS, and TCMS warehouses as well as the SIS warehouse.
SIS Self Service (SISWeb)
Curriculum and Program Planning (CAPP) (Degree Evaluation)
Prerequisites: Faculty and Advisors only. Must have a Banner SIS account. Pre-registration is required. *
In this course you will learn about the new automated Degree Evaluation (CAPP) for General Education and major requirements and how you can use this tool for advising your students. Learn how to view and read degree evaluations, and run what-if-analysis. You should have basic SISWeb skills before taking this class.

Care and Feeding of My PC
Keep your PC running at it's best. This course will teach you the utilities and programs to maintain its performance. We'll cover adware, pop-ups, spyware, and viruses too.
Computing Essentials for SOU
Organize your life at SOU by understanding the network, your network account, your e-mail account, and the Barracuda spam filter. You'll also learn about managing your F and G drive space, printing, and an overview of other educational technology resources and support available on campus.
Clicker Technology
Using Clicker Tecnology
Engage your audience with interactive "clicker" technology. This program and the associated devices, allow you to gather "real-time" responses to your questions. Everyone participates and interest goes up. Use it for humor or use it anonymously, to get reactions to controversial subjects. You must know PowerPoint to use this technology and participation in this class is required before you may check out "clickers" from media services.
Communication
GroupWise - Basics
This class covers the basics of electronic mail-reading, replying, forwarding, and attaching files to messages. Learn to organize documents into folders and use the sent items folder. You will also be introduced to the Address Book and email archiving procedures.
GroupWise - Advanced
Covers further enhancements of GroupWise including; setting up groups, vacation rules, and options such as HTML and signatures. This is an advanced course; GroupWise - Introduction is a suggested prerequisite.
Microsoft Office 2007
Office Introduction
A new and exciting version of Office that includes many new interactive features. Learn about "The Ribbon", zoom, push pins, and many other great new time saving features. This class is highly recommended. It will make your transition from Office 2003 a breeze and prevent frustration. After taking this class you are encouraged to install this new version and use it right away!
Access - Basics
Learn about relational databases. General overview of tables, forms, reports and queries. We will develop a simple database and see how the items fit together.
Access - Advanced
Delve into table properties, forms, validation, and other more in-depth parts of Access. Access - Introduction is a suggested prerequisite to this course.
Excel - Basics
Get comfortable with Excel's spreadsheet capabilities. Learn about auto-fill, formulas, formatting and charts. Find out how easy Excel really is.
Excel - Tips and Tricks
These tips and tricks will make your work in Excel more productive and efficient. A look at: format, the formula bar, how to set up a form for data input, outlines, charts and moving data between worksheets.
PowerPoint - Introduction
PowerPoint is a great tool to enhance your presentations. Learn effective ways to engage your audience and how to avoid classic errors. We'll also cover 6 x 6 design, animation, backgrounds, and how to setup with a laptop. See how easily you can add audio and video to your PowerPoint. This is a suggested prerequisite for the "Using Clicker Technology" class.
Word - Basics
Learn how to make Microsoft Word work for you. This class covers basic features and customization, including formatting, and page layout.
Word - Lists and Outlines
One of the most reported frustrations by our users is using outlines. In this course you'll learn how to effectively make lists, bullets and outlines. Learn about the quick ways to control your document.
Word - Tips and Tricks
Make quick work of your Word documents. This course will teach you about Styles, Auto-correct and columns. This is a fun course that will be worth your time.
Word - Track Changes and Document Protection
Use Word's Track Changes feature to collaborate with others. Learn how to accept and remove changes, see the document in different modes, view changes by person and much more. Also learn how to protect your document from unauthorized access or changes.
Word - Working with Tables
Effectively layout your documents by using the tables command. Discover how to easily make columns line up and use the wizard to auto format the display of information.
Mobile Computing
Laptop - Basics
For those who have, or plan to get a laptop, this course will make you comfortable with ports, displays, wireless and remote networks. We'll explore all the features and options. Bring your laptop along if you want more specific instruction.
Laptop - Advanced and Mobile Computing
This advanced course will cover power management, wireless networks, PDA's, security at home and on the road, "SOU Anywhere" and LCD setup. We'll also talk about "Spyware" and viruses.
MySOU
MySOU - Introduction
Find out what all the talk is about! Single sign-on to all of your most used resources (Netmail, GroupWise Web Access, Blackboard, SISWeb, and much more). Learn about Groups and how you can use them for classes, committees, projects and authorized clubs. This class is open to everyone! Students, Faculty and Staff.
MySOU - Faculty SISWeb
Prerequisites: Faculty and Staff only. Pre-registration is required. *
MySOU-Faculty SISWeb. Faculty SISWeb provides faculty with easy, secure access (on campus or at home) to the Banner SIS administrative data needed to effectively manage instructor information and advise students. Now this functionality is even easier to access and use through the new MySOU portal. This class will teach participants how to use MySOU-Faculty SISWeb to access information with single sign on such as a faculty member's schedule, a class list of students, a wait list of students, curriculum information about students, registration information and final grade entry.
Web Site Maintenance
Web Publish Training
This class is for faculty/staff that are currently using the Web Publish content management software to manage their department's website. If you received initial training for the software package in the past, but need a brush up on how to modify and post web pages this is the class for you.
