Computer Skills Checklist

File Maintenance

  • Open files
  • Save as a new file name & know where the file is saved
  • Delete files & rename files
  • Copy or move files to a new location, including to and from a floppy disk
  • Use Find, including advanced options like key word and location searches, to search for a document
  • Save as a new file format, and know when and why to use this feature
  • Understand the implications of file extensions. (Windows uses file extensions to establish a relationship between documents and applications. When using a file open function, there is often a default extension assumed. Can you conduct a search on all files and do you understand the application implications of using different file extensions?)

Directory Maintenance

  • Use directory structures to organize documents for efficient retrieval
  • Create, rename, and delete directories and subdirectories

Working with external Disks

  • Format a Floppy or USB drive
  • Copy files to an external disk
  • Burn a CD-ROM to archive your files

Manage Desktop

  • Manage open windows
  • Minimize or maximize a window
  • Tile or resize a window
  • Understand the concept of active and inactive windows
  • Access a specific application when several are open

Word Processing

  • Page formatting (margins, tabs, indents, bullets, paragraph alignment, paper size and type)
  • Text formatting (font type, size, bold, underline, etc.)
  • Use of tool bars, spell checking, print preview, search and replace
  • Negotiating multiple open word processing documents
  • Setting up preferences and options, such as automatic backup, preferred directories, etc

Copy & Paste

  • Cut, Copy, and Paste text and graphics from one document to another

Importing Text Files

  • Know how to import text files with .txt, .lis, or .csv extensions into spreadsheets, database, or word processing documents
  • Understand the implication of delimited files where fields are separated by commas or other place holders; examples of such files include the student class lists provided by computing services.

Printing

  • Set your default printer
  • Select a printer
  • Cancel or suspend a print job

Help

  • Use a built-in help system to answer basic "how to" questions
  • When available, use Wizards or Coaches to ask questions or handle initial document formatting

E-Mail

  • Compose and address messages
  • Add, open, and save attachments
  • Print messages and attachments
  • Manage folders
  • Create personal address lists for Email
  • Send Internet mail
  • Archive mail not accessed frequently
  • Change preferences and/or setup, including directory preferences and cleanup options
  • Manage your junk mail
  • Manage your spam quarantine

Basic Network Skills

  • Figure out where various drive letters are pointed
  • Know how to browse for things you can't immediately find (different than the find functions described under File Maintenance)

Basic Housekeeping Skills

  • Figure out how much space a file and/or directory takes up
  • Determine how much free space is available on a hard drive; know what to do if your hard drive is too full
  • Defragment your disk
  • Check for viruses/spyware
  • Zip/unzip files

Internet

  • Browse the Web, starting with the SOU Home Page
  • View events on the SOU Campus Calendar

Safe Computing

  • Identify scams on the web or in your e-mail
  • Avoid websites that will plant spyware
