SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY
TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND CAMPUS INFORMATION
The Telecommunications and Campus Information Office is located on the second floor in the Main Lab of the Computing Services Building, CSLab 201J & CSLab 201K. These offices provide support for:
- Voice telephone service and voice mail for the campus and residence hall students.
- High speed connections to the local public network for voice and data.
- University operator and directory assistance.
- University and community information for calls received by the main switchboard.
All items relating to telecommunications service requirements and problems should be channeled through the Telecommunications Office.
Long Distance Calling Authorization
New employees need to use a Long Distance Authorization Code for making long distance business calls. They should have their Telephone Counselor (Office Coordinator/Secretary), Department Chair, or Director send an e-mail or written request to Dona Bugg in the Telecommunications office – buggd@sou.edu. The request needs to indicate Department Chair approval and include the full name of the new employee, and the accounting Index Code to be charged. Long Distance Authorization Codes can be available the next working day.
For frequent travelers, Telecommunications can also issue an ATT Calling Card that enables travelers to charge their business telephone calls back to their University account. Contact Dona Nelson-Bugg at 2-6800.
Telephone User Orientation
Your department Telephone Counselor should be able to provide basic instruction regarding the campus dialing system and procedures for setting up your voice mailbox. A personal orientation meeting may also be requested by contacting Tess Dunaway, 2-6300 or dunaway@sou.edu to schedule an appointment at your convenience.
Directory Assistance
Directory assistance for cities in Oregon, State of Oregon offices, Oregon colleges/universities, area codes, network dialing instructions and assistance, and other miscellaneous information is available. If you require directory assistance for Oregon, we can, in most instances, locate the number you need. Dial “0” for the campus operator.
How to Report Telephone Trouble
If a problem develops with your telephone, first report the problem to your department’s Telephone Counselor who is available to assist with telephone questions or basic problems. You will need to provide your Telephone Counselor with as much information as possible, including:
A detailed description of the problem. The telephone number of the phone involved. Your Room/Office number.Trouble calls are handled by the Faculty & Staff Help Desk, 2-6900. The exception is unlocking a mailbox which is handled by contacting Tess Dunaway directly at 2-6300. You may also contact the Faculty & Staff Help Desk directly. The Faculty and Staff Help Desk staff will open a trouble ticket for you, and route it appropriately.
Malfunctioning pay phones and telephones should also be reported to 2-6300, the system administrator.
Telephone Billing
All telephone bills for the University are processed by Dona Bugg, 2-6800, in the Telecommunications Office. If you have any questions regarding your monthly personal call summary, call Dona or attach a note to the bill and direct it to her in the Telecommunications office. She can research unidentified phone calls, and issue a credit when if justified. Web based bills are available online after the 29th of each month.
Employees of the Oregon University System are not authorized to complete personal long distance calls using their Long Distance Authorization Code. Personal calls should be billed to your credit card or personal calling card.
Faculty/Staff Directory
A new SOU faculty/staff directory is prepared for publication and distribution in the early fall of each year. Your department will receive an appropriate number of directories when they are available. Additional directories may be requested by contacting Dona Bugg, 2-6800.
Switchboard Hours
The campus switchboard has coverage Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Dial “0” to reach the Campus Operator.
Restricted Use of InWats Number
Telecommunications designed the campus InWats (800) number for exclusive use by the Registrar, Admissions, Financial Aid, and Athletics offices. The Campus 800 number should not be utilized for personal calls. This line is monitored regularly to insure appropriate usage.
The Telecommunications team is dedicated to providing the highest level of customer service to the campus community.
