Student Dial-up Internet Service
The Technology Resource Fee that students pay enables SOU to provide each student with free dial-up Internet service. SOU provides local dial-up telephone numbers for Ashland, Medford, Grants Pass, and Klamath Falls. Students outside of these local calling areas are responsible for paying any long-distance telephone charges. If you are looking for high speed or wireless Internet access you may consider taking advantage of the local Internet Service Providers discounts available to SOU students.

Using the Dial-up Service
The dial-up service allows you to browse the Internet, send and receive email, and transfer files to and from your personal F: drive. The dial-up system does not give you access to campus software. Follow the instructions that came with your operating system to configure your dial-up service. You may visit or call the Student Help Desk at (541) 552-8544 or call InfoStructure at (541) 552-0911. When configuring your dial-up service you will need to provide your email account name and network account password.

Time Limits
The dial-up service has a limited number of telephone lines. A 15 minute inactivity timer will disconnect idle users, ensuring everyone gets a chance to connect. If you are disconnected you may reconnect if you need to. The inactivity timer monitors the connection for sent or received data. Even though you may be doing something on the computer, such as reading a lengthy email or web page, or writing email, the computer is not actually sending or receiving data. To avoid being disconnected, you can use the browser refresh function on the web page your are viewing or check for new mail messages every few minutes.
