What positions are available with SOU IT?

Lab Aide

Lab Aides assist other students using SOU Student Computer Labs. Problems may be related to software, hardware, printing, e-mail, or the Internet. We provide training and a fun work environment. Besides getting paid, Lab Aides learn about computers and customer service.

You do not have to be a computer expert to become a Lab Aide. We employ drama majors, business majors, foreign language majors, you name it. If you know a little about computers and have the ability to work well with others we encourage you to apply.

Help Desk Technician

Help Desk Technicians take calls from Faculty and Staff who are having computer related problems. The technician attempts to solve the problem over the phone or collects information and escalates the issue to IT staff. Help Desk Technicians may also be assigned duties on the campus switchboard, answering general questions and directing callers to the correct department or person.

To qualify for this position you should have a good understanding of computer software (especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint and e-mail) and some knowledge of computer hardware. Previous customer service experience is a plus.

Install/Repair Technician

Install/Repair Technicians provide technical computer service for the campus. This includes installing or relocating computers, printers and network equipment, installing operating system images and desktop software, minor computer and printer repairs and troubleshooting network connectivity, operating system and desktop software configuration problems.

Computer installation and repair experience is a plus but on the job training is also available.

Lab and Classroom Support Technician

LaCSup Technicians provide technical computer services to labs and classrooms. This includes installing or relocating computers, printers and network equipment, installing operating system images and desktop software, minor computer and printer repairs and troubleshooting network connectivity, operating system and desktop software configuration problems.

To qualify for this position you should have knowledge and experience installing operating systems and desktop software and a good understanding of enterprise data networks.

Network Technician

Network Technicians have a variety of highly technical duties. This includes creating laptop operating system images and setting up new laptop computers, performing weekly backup tape rotations on the enterprise tape backup system, troubleshooting moderately complex operating system, application software and network configuration problems and a variety of research and development projects.

Many Network Technicians are promoted from other teams upon demonstrating their technical proficiency. This position requires a high degree of technical knowledge and expertise.

Telecommunication Technician

Telecommunication Technicians perform installation, delivery and repair of telephone equipment, installation and repair of analog and digital telephone and electronic data network wiring and management of cable record database.

On the job training is provided in this position. You should be familiar with and able to use basic tools, be comfortable working in small or confined spaces and be able to lift 50 pounds. 

IT/Media Receptionist

Answers IT calls, assist walk-in visitors, perform clerical tasks and media equipment check in/out and provide general office help to the IT staff. This position enables you to learn how a technical department operates.
