Description

The Main Lab is the primary work center of our campus community and is open to all SOU students. It is the largest computer lab on campus, and one of the largest facilities of its kind in the Northwest, housing more than 150 microcomputers and operating on a Novell NetWare network, to provide software services to Windows and Macintosh computers, as well as access to the Internet and electronic mail. Output for the entire laboratory is done on high-speed laser printers. Special facilities for visually and physically disabled persons are available as well. Scanners and color printers provide specialized input and output capabilities.

We are continually expanding and upgrading our software, hardware and services to provide Southern Oregon's students with the best technology available. Our staff of friendly lab aides is here to answer whatever questions you might have and to assist you with any problems using the equipment. If you have any questions regarding SOU's technology available to students, this is the place to go to get answers. We are here to help you.

Computing Services Center, East building.

Printing Charges

Black & White Printing
  • Single sided Black & White printers charge $0.05 per page.
  • Duplex (double sided) printers charge $0.05 per side.
  • The names of these printers end with "Pay".
  • The two Windows printers are split by network account name. Account names beginning with A through K print to one printer, L through Z prints to the other.
Color Printing

We have 2 ways of charging for color printing:

  • Automatic
    • For Windows computers, if all you need to print is regular, single sided 8.5" x 11" white paper use the automatic color printer.
    • Your student account will be charged automatically $0.25 for each color print.
    • The names of these printers end with "Color_Pay".
  • Manual
    • For Windows or Macintosh users, if you need to use a custom size or special media (glossy, transparency, your own paper) use the manual color printer.
    • When the computer is finished printing, go to the front desk and inform the lab aide you are printing a manual Windows or Macintosh color print job. The lab aid will punch the appropriate amount on your punch card and release your print job to be printed. If you do not have a punch card, you may purchase one at the front desk. Punch card purchase may be charged to your student account.
    • Prices range from $0.25 - $2.25 depending on paper size and quality. For detailed prices on special paper and printing materials please ask at the front desk.
    • The names of these printers end with "Color_Hold".

Additional Services

  • Students with a disability who need to use the second floor computers have the option of signing out a remote control (which requires a $25 deposit) from the Main Lab Manager. Please ask at the front desk for details.
  • We have items available for sign-out such as negative holders for scanning of negatives, FireWire cables to connect peripherals such as cameras or external hard drives and headphones (for use with Dragon Naturally Speaking only). These items require photo ID for sign out.

Additional Policies

  • No dogs or other animals are allowed in the Main Lab. The only exception are service animals assisting customers with a disability, that are well-behaved and wearing a harness.
  • If you have children with you, we ask that they are supervised and well behaved. Children are not allowed to use lab computers for play.
  • The upstairs doors may not be opened by students, except students with a registered disability using an issued remote controller.
  • Please refrain from using the scanner stations if you are not using the scanner.
