Desktop Operating Systems & Software

Computing Services is committed to supporting both the Macintosh and Windows operating systems (OS). We do our best to ensure that the software programs on the network are widely available. However, some options may not be available to you if your computer hardware does not meet the minimum standards for a particular software program.

* Software requires a request for install. Please call the Help Desk at (2-6900) to schedule.

Licenses for most of the software on the Campus Information System Menu (available from the Windows Start menu) for Windows computers, and many comparable programs used on Macintosh computers, are purchased using Computing Services or Technology Reserve funds. These programs are purchased, installed and supported by Computing Services. Many of these programs are covered under campus license agreements. Some of these license agreements permit us to upgrade to newer versions of the software. Computing Services routinely schedules upgrades to these newer versions as project schedules allow. If you require a newer version which has not yet been installed please contact the faculty and staff Helpdesk (2-6900).

One important license agreement that campus users will want to know more about is the Microsoft Campus Agreement

Periodically, old versions of some programs will be removed from the network as software publishers discontinue support for these old programs. Before this happens campus users are always notified well in advance.

Home Software
A few of the software license agreements allow users to install a copy of the software on a personal/home computer. These programs are available through IT and in some cases require a fee. For more information reference these pages:

Microsoft Products purchased by Computing Services.

Products purchased by departments from OETC.

These software license agreements do require that you remove the software from your personal home  computer if your relationship with the University terminates or if the University terminates the license agreement.  You will be required to sign an agreement acknowledging your responsibility to remove the software upon termination of your employment with SOU or termination of the agreement.  You may only use this software to complete University work.  This software should not be used for personal use or by family members.

Computing Services does not provide support for your home computer. Installation, updates, and maintenance of the above software is your responsibility.

Requests to Install Software on Campus Network

A variety of software programs used for specific teaching, research and administrative uses are purchased by individual departments and installed on the network for select users. Since the configuration and support requirements of each software product varies, we cannot assure that every software product will work reliably on the campus network. We require a minimum of 3 weeks advance notification (more time may be required prior to term start dates) for installation of network software products.  Anyone considering the purchase of a software program that will be installed on the network should contact Teri O'Rourke (2-6451), to review the configuration, hardware, licensing and support requirements.
