Virus and Spyware Protection for Home Computers

Did you know SOU provides home use versions of McAfee Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware software? This software is provided free of charge at the IT Reception/Media Services, Computing Service Center Building Room 117. You are entitled to use the software while you are employed at SOU. There are also home use versions of the software available for students through the Housing Office or the Main Lab.

The Anti-Virus software has been available for Windows and Macintosh users for the past couple of years. This year we are adding the Anti-Spyware for Windows product (there is no product needed for the Macintosh). Keep the following points in mind to ensure top performance from your computer.

  • Do not run more than one anti-virus program on your computer.
  • You may run more than one anti-spyware program, but realize that it may affect the overall performance of your PC.
  • If you are using another vendor's anti-virus software, you can use McAfee Anti-Spyware without installing McAfee Anti-Virus.
  • The Windows 95/98/ME operating systems are no longer sold or supported by Microsoft and therefore are being phased out by everyone. This means that if your computer is running one of these obsolete systems, now is the time to upgrade to Windows XP. Windows 2000 is also supported.
  • If you are currently running a previous version of our anti-virus CD at home, be sure to pick up the latest CD at one of the locations listed above.
