What's New In SOU Computer Labs and Classrooms?

September 24, 2009

Earlier this summer we announced the Windows Computer Conversion project. This announcement introduces the many benefits including improvements in login time. As with any major system change there are some things you need to be aware of. We're confident you'll agree these improvements are worth adjusting to these changes. The information in this News Byte is for faculty and staff using lab and classroom facilities and includes information you can use to assist students in these facilities. More information will follow as we begin to roll out the new system to your office computers.

Lab and Classroom Log In instructions:

  • To access the login screen, follow the on-screen instructions pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete (all at the same time) on the keyboard.
  • Log in using the following format: SOU\"username" and then enter your case sensitive password in the password field.
  • If you have computer login issues, it could be a problem with your password. Passwords must contain at least 6 characters. If it does not, you must set a new password using My Account in MySOU. Call the Help Desk for assistance with login issues.

Changes Specific to Faculty/Staff:

  • Your roaming profile will not load on these computers. This means your desktop will not look like it does on your office computer.
  • Users are no longer able to install software on classroom and lab computers. Please contact the Help Desk with software installation requests, 552-6900 or HelpDesk@sou.edu.
  • Your F: Drive is now labeled as the P: (for personal) drive. There will be no change to your G: drive access.
  • The My Documents folder no longer works. To access your documents; browse to your P: drive. This will be fixed as we convert faculty and staff computers to the new system over the year.
  • Generic accounts (i.e. LabMgr, club or general office) will need to be copied over to the new system. Contact the Help Desk with account conversion requests, 552-6900 or HelpDesk@sou.edu.
  • Until your department is moved to the new system use the "My Files NetStorage" icon from MySOU to access files from off-campus.

Changes Specific to Students:

  • Your F: Drive is now labeled as the P: (for personal) drive.
  • These system changes require that you manually copy your personal web pages to a new web server. The step-by-step Instructions and tutorial are posted at http://webpages.sou.edu.
  • SOU Anywhere and MyFiles are being replaced by a new off-campus file access system called WebDAV. A new "My Files WebDAV" icon is available on MySOU for students. Information and instructions for use of this exciting new feature are displayed when you click the new "My Files WebDAV" icon.
