Pinning Items to the  Windows XP Start Menu

Pinning Programs to the Start Menu

Note: When you Pin an item to the Start Menu, it will be available only on that computer. It will not follow you to other computers around campus. IT recommends that you use the Quick Launch option (see Task Bar documentation) or Personal Menu option for program shortcuts that you want to follow you to other computers.

Note: You cannot Pin programs accessed from the Campus Network menus (located in section 1). You can Pin programs located in the standard All Programs menu (section 2). Even though GroupWise is part of the Standard All Programs menu, it cannot be pinned to the start menu.

How to Pin from the standard All Programs menu:

  1. Click the button, click All Programs, and right-click the the program of choice (i.e. Internet Explorer). A pop-up menu will appear.
  2. Select “Pin to Start Menu.” The program icon will appear on your Start Menu.
  3. To launch the program, Click the Start button and click once on the program Icon (i.e. Internet Explorer).

How to Pin programs not located on the standard All Programs Menu

In order to Pin a program not located on the All Programs menu, you must navigate to the program through Windows Explorer.

This is and example of how to Pin Microsoft Office programs:

  1. Right-click the button.
  2. Left-click Explore once (opens Windows Explorer)
  3. Left-click Local Disk (C:) in the left pane of the explorer window
  4. Left-click Program Files
  5. Left-click MSOffice
  6. Left-click Office
  7. In the right pane of the explorer window find one of the following application files:
    • EXCEL.EXE
    • MSACCESS.EXE
    • POWERPNT.EXE
    • WINWORD.EXE
  8. Right-click the above file of choice and click “Pin to Start Menu” from the pop-up menu.
  9. Close the Windows Explorer window.
  10. To launch the program, Click the Start button and click once on the program Icon (i.e. Excel)

How to unpin a program

Once a program is pinned on the Start Menu it is very easy to remove it from that list:

  1. Left-click the button.
  2. Right-click the program icon you wan to remove from the Pinned List.
  3. Left-click “Unpin from Start Menu” from the pop-up menu.
