Corel Conversion - .wpd files

Converting WordPerfect (.wpd) Documents to Word

After testing many converting options, SOU IT recommends using Microsoft Word's built in capabilities to convert WordPerfect documents. We recommend that you set-up a new folder on your F: or G: drive to save all of your converted WordPerfect documents. This will allow you to reference converted documents for verifying formatting and content and enable you to convert a document again in the case there are problems with the initial conversion.

Note: The following conversion documentation is for .wpd files and do not include WordPerfect Merge (.frm or .dat) Files. For converting Mail Merge documents, please see the conversion documentation for WordPerfect Mail Merge documents.

Converting a Single WordPerfect (.wpd) Document with Word
  1. Launch Microsoft Word.
  2. Click File, Open
  3. Double check to make sure the Files of type: reads All Files (*.*). If it doesn't, change it by using the drop down arrow.
  4. Browse for the WordPerfect document you want to convert by using the Look in: drop down box.
  5. Either double click the document you want to convert, or click once (the file name will highlight blue) and click the Open button. The document will open in Word.
  6. Do not save the converted file… please see the section for Saving a Converted Document.
Saving a Single Converted Document

Note: You must use the Save As… method for saving the converted document. If you simply use the Save method, your document will save in Word format with a .wpd file extension and will cause problems.

  1. Click File, Save As
  2. Change the Save in: folder by selecting the down arrow and navigating to the appropriate folder.
  3. Make sure the Save as type: is set to Word Document (*.doc).
  4. Make sure the File name: has a .doc extension and not a .wpd extension.
  5. Click Save.
Batch Converting a multiple WordPerfect (.wpd) Document with Word
  1. Launch Microsoft Word.
  2. Click File, New
  3. Click the Other Documents tab in the pop-up dialogue box.
  4. Either double click the Batch Conversion Wizard, or click once (the Batch Conversion Wizard will highlight blue) and click the OK button. The Batch Conversion Wizard will launch.
  1. Click the Next button.
  1. Select "Convert from another format to Word".
  2. Click the down arrow for the file type you are going to convert and select WordPerfect 6.x.
  3. Click the Next button.

Note: You must now select the Source Folder (the folder where your .wpd files are located) and the Destination Folder (the folder where the converted files will be saved. It is recommended that the Source folder and the Destination folder are different.

Note: You are only selecting the folder at this time, not the actual .wpd files.

  1. Click the Browse button for the Source Folder and navigate to the appropriate folder.
  2. Click the Browse button for the Destination Folder and navigate to the appropriate folder.

The folder path will be listed below the Source and Destination sections.

The Available: section will list all the .wpd files located in the Source folder selected in the previous step.

The To Convert: section will initially be empty, but will list the files to convert once you select them.

To Select All Files:

  1. Simply click the Select All button. If you select all, the Available section will be empty and the To Convert section will list all the files.
  2. Click the Next button.

To Select Files Individually:

  1. Double click the file in the Available section - it will move to the To Convert Section. Double click the next file in the Available section… etc.
  2. Once you have selected the files you want to convert, click the Next button.

The converted files will be named the same as the original document, except it will now contain a .doc file extension

Note: If your Destination folder contains a file with an identical name as a file you are going to convert, it will be overwritten without warning you!

  1. Click the Finish button.
The Batch Conversion Progress will show you the status of your conversion.

When the Conversion is complete, a message box will ask if you would like to perform another conversion, Click:

Yes - to perform another conversion
