Purchasing: Windows Desktop Computers
Windows Desktop Computers
Information Technology is currently recommending purchasing Tangent computers that meet these minimum specifications:
- Pentium IV
- Hard Drive 40 GB
- 256 MB Memory
- 17" Color CRT or 15" Flat Panel LCD Monitor
- 16 MB Video Card
- DVDCD-RW Drive
- Windows 98*
- Intel 10/100 Network Card
* Note: We will begin migrating the campus to Windows XP in Fall 2002. The configuration above will support Windows XP. Our campus license agreement with Microsoft ensures there will be no cost to upgrade to XP.
Power spikes in the Ashland area make it necessary to install a quality surge protector. The Isobar surge protector we recommend costs $40.
When making your buying decisions please consider the many benefits of purchasing a Tangent computer. Because we have standardized on Tangent, Information Technology is able to stock parts for these systems. When parts are on hand we can provide you with faster repair service. Remember that the Tangent computers come with a 3 year system warranty. Some manufacturers do not provide a 3 year warranty. The maintenance contract that the University has with Tangent Computer allows SOU trained technicians to do warranty repair work on the equipment. A maintenance arrangement with Tangent assists us in funding the cost of the labor to repair your computer. During the 3 year warranty and with the on-site service program your department will not be charged when your computer requires repair. Our technicians are most experienced with the Tangent hardware. This means that we can provide you with faster service when you encounter equipment and software configuration problems.
