SOU E-mail System Overview

We have two different E-Mail systems on campus. Faculty and Staff use the Novell GroupWise system while Students use Novell NetMail. These systems work together very well. Faculty can easily find students' addresses in the GroupWise address book and students can easily find faculty address in the NetMail address book. Both systems provide the same WebAccess interface. The main difference is that GroupWise has advanced groupware features like a calendar, shared folder, shared address books, and more which are of value to faculty and staff, but not needed for students. For information on the student e-mail system visit the Student Computing web site.

GroupWise E-mail for Faculty & Staff

Faculty and administrative staff utilize a campus wide E-mail system called GroupWise. The GroupWise E-mail system provides a robust set of E-mail features, which enhance communication activities for the campus community. The system shares a common address list, which includes all faculty and staff; "public group" address lists can be used for routing mail to groups of people - for example, a campus committee, all faculty, or the entire campus. E-mail addressed for distribution across the Internet can be sent using the GroupWise system. The GroupWise software also includes calendar and scheduling features which enable users to schedule group meetings and perform "busy searches" to determine the availability of meeting attendees. Meeting attendance can be confirmed by E-mail and the appointments automatically appear in your personal calendar. You can access GroupWise from the Windows Start Menu by selecting the Campus Information System menu, and navigating to Campus Communication, and then GroupWise.

Accessing GroupWise from off campus

You can get to your e-mail from any computer that has access to the Internet by using GroupWise WebAccess. You can get to GroupWise WebAccess from the SOU Home Page by selecting Email Web Access from the Campus Community menu.
Log in with your e-mail account name and password. You'll notice that the interface is different than GroupWise in your office. But you'll still be able to send and receive e-mail and work with your calendar. There's even online help in the form of Web pages! Remember that before you can use GroupWise Web Access with your Internet account you must set a GroupWise Password while logged in on your campus computer. For assistance, contact the Help Desk at 2-6900.

Here are some tips for using GroupWise WebAccess:

  • Always use the GroupWise Exit button, rather than simply quitting your Browser or going to a different site. (This closes out your sessions properly, rather than leaving the database "open.")
  • Use the navigation buttons on the GroupWise pages rather than your browser's forward and back buttons. (This enables GroupWise to refresh the pages correctly.)
  • When viewing a list of messages, note that they are listed with the most recent messages at the top.

One advantage of using WebAccess is that there are no system requirements or software to buy other than a Web Browser and a connection to the Internet. No matter where you are in the world or whose computer you're using, if you can get to the Web, you can use your e-mail!
