Your SOU Network Account

All Students, Faculty, and Staff are provided with a network account. Your account gives you access to a number of network services including:

Your SOU Network Account gives you many privileges, and some responsibility. Please read our Acceptable Use Policy.

Network Login

Every user is assigned a username and password for network access. You use these to login to campus computers or to access your e-mail and files from remote sites. You username is also the first part of your e-mail address. For example if your username is SmithJ your e-mail address, if you are faculty or staff, is smithj@sou.edu, or if you are a student, smithj@students.sou.edu.

SOU Network Accounts are created automatically for students when they register for classes, but new faculty or staff have to submit an account request form. Account request forms are available from the Faculty and Staff Help Desk at 552-6900.

File Storage

Home Directory
Your SOU Network Account provides you with a place to save documents on the network File Servers, and share them with others. Each person has a personal directory called your “Home Directory” (on Windows computer this is sometimes called your F: drive). Here you can save documents that only you need access to. Your Home Directory is secured so that only you can access the files stored there. On a Windows computer files saved in “My Documents” are automatically saved in the MyDocs folder in your Home Directory.

Department Folder
Every department has a shared data folder (on Windows computers this is sometimes called the G: drive) where you can save documents for others in your department to access. For faculty, there is also a sub-folder in your Department Folder called “Classes” in which you can place documents that students can access from the computer labs. Never place anything in the Classes folder that you don't want students to access. The rest of your Department Folder (other then Classes) is only accessable to people in your department.

Other Shared Folders
We can create a shared folder for any arbitrary group of people. If you are part of a group that needs a place to save shared documents just call the Faculty and Staff Help Desk at 2-6900 and request one.

E-Mail

Your SOU Network Account provides you with an e-mail address and e-mail storage. Faculty and staff use the Novell GroupWise e-mail system which also provides helpful personal information management tools such as a Calendar, To-Do list and more. For complete documentation on using GroupWise visit our GroupWise Documentation Website.

Students use the Novell NetMail system which is very similar to GroupWise, and works very well with GroupWise, but doesn't have all of the features of Groupwise that most students don't need. To find out more about our student e-mail system visit the Student Computing website.

Network Printing

When logged in to the SOU Campus Network you can usually access one of many network printers for printing your documents. Most departments have a shared network printer and many have networked multi-function printer/copiers. Someone in your department will know where the nearest one to you is.

Network printing is also available in the student labs. In the labs there is a per copy charge for printing to cover the cost of paper and maintenance on the printers.
