Language Requirements for Non-Native Speakers
Southern Oregon University provides non-native English speakers assistance in developing the writing and communication skills needed for a successful university experience. The coursework is developed and taught by faculty committed to international education.
Non-native English speakers who are admitted to SOU as degree-seeking students with a TOEFL score below 580 pBT, 237 cBT or 92 iBT are required to complete English 101 and 102 during their first year at SOU. This policy applies to all non-native English speakers enrolled at Southern Oregon University, regardless of citizenship or residency status. English 101 and 102 will help improve the non-native English speaker's reading, speaking and writing skills with course materials that focus on United States culture. This series of courses also fulfills the Arts & Letters Exploration Sequence of the SOU General Education Requirements.
Please be advised that English 101 and 102 require an administrative fee. The fee is currently $120 per course. Tuition remissions and exchange waivers do not cover this fee.
You may be exempt from the SOU language policy if you meet any of the following criteria:
- You are not seeking a degree from SOU.
- You have submitted an official TOEFL score at or above 580 pBT, 237 cBT or 92 iBT.
- You have completed an AA, BA, BS or other advanced degree at an accredited US university, junior college or community college.
- You have completed Writing 121 and 122 or equivalent courses at an accredited US university, junior college or community college.
If you believe you have been mistakenly required to meet the SOU language policy, please contact the International Student Advisor in the Office of International Programs.
